Horizon's Abbey Lee Says Kevin Costner Was 'Sensitive' About Their Sex Scene: I Was 'Comfortable' (Exclusive)

Kevin Costner made sure Abbey Lee was “really comfortable” with the logistics of their sex scene in the Horizon: An American Saga — Chapter 1.

In the first installment of the epic western, out now, Lee plays Marigold, the love interest of Costner’s lead character Hayes Ellison. At one point, they have an intimate scene in the train car.

“Kevin was very sensitive about it,” Lee, 37, tells PEOPLE. “He made sure I was comfortable and we had a long talk about it beforehand.”

According to the Australian actress, Costner (69) “told me how it would be filmed, that there would be no nudity, that there would be nothing explicit.”

“You have to talk about the details of it so you understand what’s going on so everyone feels safe and comfortable,” she adds. – And obviously we had those conversations.

On top of feeling safe with each other, Lee continues, “then it’s just a matter of being comfortable with the team that has to be in the room, and the ones that don’t have to, aren’t there.”

“But yes, there is always an element of discomfort [with sex scenes],” she says. “They’re always a little weird, but as long as you can trust the people around you… it’s just weird because people are standing in the room while you’re doing this fake, intimate thing. It’s really weird.”

Speaking about the film’s chemistry in general, Costner and Lee’s co-star Jamie Campbell Bower tells PEOPLE, “I think, as actors, there’s [foundational] degree of trust.”

“And Kevin is so brilliant at what he does and he’s so experienced that you look into the eyes of someone who really knows what he’s doing, and you trust each other in that moment that you’re going to bring it and you know that for sure,” adds the Stranger Things star, 35.

The official synopsis teases it Horizon, for which Costner first began exploring the idea more than 35 years ago, “explores the allure of the Old West and how it was won — and lost — through the blood, sweat and tears of many.”

Spanning four years of the Civil War, from 1861 to 1865, Kevin Costner’s ambitious cinematic adventure will take audiences on an emotional journey through a country at war with itself, experienced through the lens of family, friends and enemies as they try to discover what it truly means. to be the United States of America,” the synopsis adds.

In addition to Costner, Lee and Bower, the star-studded ensemble of the four-part epic includes Sienna Miller, Sam Worthington, Abbey Lee, Michael Rooker, Jamie Campbell Bower, Ella Hunt, Isabelle Fuhrman, Jena Malone, Luke Wilson and more, as well as Costner’s son Hayes, 15 , in his first film role.

When asked if they thought they would survive the Old West era in real life, Bower and Lee gave PEOPLE a resounding yes.

“I’m naturally quite resilient and I think at that time you had to have a certain amount of resilience to survive. So that’s where my strength came from,” says Lee.

But there’s one caveat, he admits: “I don’t like the desert, so that would be awkward. I’m more of a water person.”

Horizon: An American Saga — Chapter 1 is now in theaters, and will follow 2. Chapter August 16.
