The pilot was the only person on the plane at the time and their condition is currently unknown, local media reported.

The hotel is located on the very coast of the city and is a branch of the American giant Hilton.

All 400 people in the hotel were evacuated with fuel lying around that “could explode”.

Witnesses described a red helicopter that flew away from the hotel and then returned “straight into the building.”

Part of the helicopter lay on the berm in front of the building as residents gathered around it during the evacuation.

One person passing by in the street immediately after the accident described the scene as “madness”.

Clips show a red fire lighting up the top of a building in the dark night.

The siren was wailing for the evacuation of the occupants of the eight-story building.

She said, “It just got crushed.”

“The guy who was going fast and the helicopter… the red helicopter… passed by twice.

“That thing was just getting out of hand.”

A smaller fire could also be seen on the ground floor of the hotel below the place where the helicopter landed.

Queensland Police said they had set up a no-go zone to keep the public away from the plane crash due to the helicopter crash.

The Public Safety Preservation Act (PSPA) zone includes Esplanade, Minnie Street, Abbott Street and Florence Street.

They said: “The building was evacuated as a precaution and there were no injuries to people on the ground.”
