Shocked locals found a WOMAN’s body on the beach – police launched an investigation.

Officers were called at 9.25am this morning to reports that a body had been seen in the water near Shanklin on the Isle of Wight.

They attended the scene along with HM Coastguard boat, rescue helicopter and RNLI lifeboat.

A woman in her 70s was pronounced dead at the scene and a case of “unexpected” death will be prepared for the coroner.

Official identification has yet to be completed, but the woman’s next of kin have been notified.

HM Coastguard said: “This morning we responded to reports of a person in the water at Shanklin.

“Alert at around 9.30am, coastguard rescue teams, an RNLI lifeboat and a coastguard search and rescue helicopter were dispatched to the scene.”

Hampshire & Isle of Wight Police said: “We were called at 9.25am today to reports that the body of a woman had been seen in the water on the beach at Shanklin.”

The spokesman added: “We attended the scene alongside our Coastguard colleagues.

“The woman, who is in her 70s, was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident.

“Official identification has yet to be done, but her next of kin have been informed.

“A file will be prepared for the coroner in relation to this unexpected death.”
