Game of Thrones Families Keep Using the Same Name, Leading to War of the House of the Dragon
Game of Thrones fans shouldn’t feel guilty about confusing the various members of Aegon Targaryen family
The Targaryen family tree’s frequent repetition of the name “Aegon” has been a problem for viewers for over a decade, and now it’s causing them trouble. Since Aegon was the name of the Targaryen who conquered Westeros, his nickname has been reused by nearly every subsequent Targaryen generation in honor of the powerful, long-dead king. Dragon HouseBy the time of the Targaryen Wars, the confusion over the House of Aegon Targaryen had reached such a level that the confusion over the names sparked a full-blown Targaryen Civil War.

As Rhaenyra now finally tells Alicent, when Viserys talks about “Aegon” and “the Prince That Was Promised,” he’s actually referring to Aegon the Conqueror’s dream in A Song of Ice and Fire—not his son. Dragon HouseThe error of Alicent, Rhaenyra’s eldest child by Daemon, became even more frustrating. While Alicent’s reasoning for Aegon’s coronation as a way of confusing his name with Aegon the Conqueror was almost comically ironic, it wasn’t the only reason for the Dance of the Dragons. Alicent’s claim that Viserys wanted Aegon on the Iron Throne accelerated the Greens’ usurpation of the throne, as Viserys himself had a “legitimate” claim, but war would have likely broken out regardless. Otto had sown the seeds of the usurpation from Aegon’s birth, and the twenty-year feud between the Greens and the Blacks meant that some conflict was inevitable after Viserys’ death.
Viserys’s failure to quell the conflict between the Green and Black factions before a new generation of Targaryens was born meant that no matter how grievously Alicent made mistakes, war was always coming.
In fact, when Otto was dismissed as Hand of the King Aegon Dragon House In Season 2, Alicent’s father hinted that he never believed Viserys wanted Aegon to be king. Alicent’s version of Viserys’s last words means that Otto and the Green Council have less persuasive power over the other noble houses, but will find reasons to undermine Rhaenyra’s claims and put Aegon on the throne regardless. Viserys’ inability to crush the hatred between the Green and Black factions before a new generation of Targaryens is born means that war will always come, no matter how badly Alicent makes mistakes.
