House of the Dragon's Eve Best Calls That Major Death a 'Kamikaze Mission' That Marks the 'Point of No Return'

No one is ever sure of Game of Thrones universe, but the Targaryens lost a particularly beloved character in this week’s episode The house of the dragon.

In Sunday’s July 7 episode of the prequel series, Rhaenys Targaryen (Eve Best) made the ultimate sacrifice as she and her dragon faced off against Aemond (Ewan Mitchell), Aegon (Tom Glynn-Carney) and their dragons in the first true battle between the black and the green team – the one that signifies “the point of no return”.

“Someone had to step in and someone had to push the red button and start a nuclear war, effectively,” Best, 52, said in one episode The official podcast of Game of Thrones: House of the Dragonreporting on the fourth episode, which marked the death of her character.

“It became like her last bit of wisdom, like her last gift to Rhaenyra, which is, you know, this is how you’re a good leader, this is the way.”

She called it a “kamikaze mission” to send Rhaenys on a dragon back to help defend Rook’s Rest from Ser Criston Cole (Fabien Frankel) and Aegon’s army, but it was symbolic of her character’s commitment to Rhaenyra (Emma D’Arcy). “She’s just watching over everyone in the room. She’s watching over Rhaenyra. That’s her final wisdom for Rhaenyra.”

Best said Diversity that Rhaenys “knows there’s no life after” volunteering herself – and her dragon, Meleys – but it “felt very samurai.”

“It was a noble warrior’s last stand. She could have just escaped, and maybe they could have left everyone to deal with it,” she said of Rhaenys’ choice to face Aemond and Vhagar instead of fleeing. “But she’s turning around because she knows that’s what she has to do, morally and spiritually.”

The actress believes that her character – who started the series as a future queen but was instead elected to the throne by her cousin Viserys – eventually “finds peace”.

“She just felt like she was getting lighter and lighter until that last moment on Meleys’ back. I think that’s the moment she suddenly — found peace. Literally, she let go.” Best said sockets. “She was carrying all of her stuff and pretty much everyone else’s, especially for Season 2. The weight of this unimaginable burden and just letting it go. It was really peaceful.”
