Latest Stranger the film gave fans of the franchise a big surprise when it recreated the character of the late Ian Holm.
Holm, who died aged 88 in 2020, originally played the android Ash in Ridley Scott’s original 1979 film. Stranger. Although the actor himself has passed away, the new film of the series Romulus uses his likeness to portray another android named Rook, who serves as a secondary antagonist to the main characters played by Cailee Spaeny and David Jonsson.
“It was unfair that the Ash character was never used again,” Romulus said director Fede Álvarez The Hollywood Reporter the decision to use Holm’s character. Álvarez, 46, noted that other actors who played synthetic characters on the show such as Lance Henriksen and Michael Fassbender have appeared in multiple films and said show creator Scott, 86, wanted to bring back Holm’s character — or at least his character.
“So when we started thinking about this character’s likeness to Ridley, it had to be the torso [and head] that we’re going to build,” he said. “So it wasn’t meant to be a character of an actor currently employed, and it was Ridley who said, ‘Ash has always been the best. He must return.’ ”

“So we decided to do it with the permission of the family: his widow and all his children,” added the director. “We wanted to make sure everyone was on board with the idea of bringing his character back.”
Of course, the film’s latest sign-off credits Holm as the “face and voice reference” for the character Rook, while Daniel Betts performed as the character on set. Holm’s estate also gets a special thanks in the film’s closing credits.

“Rook is a different character, but I’m playing with your preconceptions because fans of the original know that face,” Álvarez said THR about inserting Holm’s face into the film. “There is also a whole generation [of new viewers] who will watch this film and the character will not mean much to them. They won’t feel the effect, but those who have seen the original know not to believe it.”
