Adam Sandler Reacts to Being an 'Accidental' Gen Z Fashion Icon (Exclusive)

Adam Sandler didn’t ask to become a fashion icon.

On Tuesday, August 20 in New York, the premiere of his new standup special I love youThe 57-year-old star responded to the Gen Z fashion trend inspired by his signature, casual “Sandlercore” style.

“You know, this is a random thing,” he told PEOPLE exclusively, “but here I am wearing stupid clothes, and I don’t know. I don’t think about it.”

The Adults the actor also learned that the trend has been dubbed “Madame Sandler” by those who pair the comedian’s trademark long, baggy shorts with a crop top.

“The crop top, I wore it when I was young,” he said. “I used to wear a tank top. It wouldn’t look great on anyone now, but I get it. Comfortable. That sounds like a good outfit.”

On the red carpet, Adam posed with his wife Jackie Sandler. The comedian stuck to his usual casual aesthetic in a yellow polo shirt and red trousers, while Jackie (49) chose an elegant black mini dress and pointed toe raincoats.

Adam’s fashion sense has been a trademark of the comedian’s decades-long career. His signature style, characterized by items like colorful sneakers and Hawaiian shirts, has inspired a recent wave of equally comfort-oriented fashion often referred to as “Sandlercore.”

During an appearance in March 2023 on The Drew Barrymore Show along with Jennifer Aniston to promote their film, Murder mystery 2the star explained the process of choosing his clothes.

“I go into my closet, I’ve got a bunch of t-shirts and shorts, they’re all kind of the same … I usually grab a t-shirt first … I just want to cover it up real quick. I’m like, heck, grab anything,” he told host Drew Barrymore. “Then I go with the shorts and put them on. Sometimes they’re a little too tight for me. I go and let them take them off and put on the triple-X shorts.”

Barrymore, 49, then mentioned Adam’s 2008 film Don’t mess with Zohansaying that he wore very “fitting” clothes for his role.

“When I was Zohan, I wore a large and then I wrapped the Zohan, a week later I was wearing an XL,” he said. “What did you do?” Aniston asked, to which Sandler replied, “I ate pizza [George] Clooney’s house.”
