The Hollywood power couple’s romance developed while working together on a 2012 film A place behind the pines and eventually started an off-screen relationship.
In the years that followed, they started a family together, welcoming two children: daughters Esmeralda Amada, 9, and Amada Lee, 7.

By the time the pair first worked together on A place behind the pinesboth were megastars in their own right, with Gosling starring in 2004’s Notebook and the 2010s Blue Valentine’s Day and Mendes has memorable roles in 2003 2 Fast 2 Fierce and in 2005 Snatch.
In the 2012 film they starred in, Gosling plays a bank robber trying to take care of his ex-girlfriend (played by Mendes) and their son. Although many assumed they first met on set, Mendes later revealed that they actually met off-screen first.
In an Instagram post shared in April 2023, Mendes reflected on the making of the film by sharing a clip of her and Gosling. “Magic is real,” she wrote before clarifying, “We didn’t meet on set.”
“The magic started a long time ago, but here’s a little magic caught on camera,” she added. “Gracias to the amazing director Derek Cianfrance.”

After starting filming in the summer of 2011, Gosling and Mendes began to fuel dating rumors later that year after going on several dates together. In September 2011, they went public with their romance by holding hands during a Disney date.
“They looked relaxed and seemed to be having fun together,” an eyewitness told PEOPLE at the time. “As a dating couple, they always walked very close, holding hands and their hands touching each other.”
Of their off-screen chemistry, a source told PEOPLE, “Ryan and Eva spent a lot of time together on set. They have great chemistry and seem to enjoy filming together. They seem to be good friends and are always laughing together.”
The couple later made their red carpet debut in September 2012 at the film’s premiere A place behind the pines at the Toronto International Film Festival in Toronto, Canada.

Although Gosling and Mendes are notoriously private about their relationship, they do open up about working together from time to time.
During the interview with GQ In 2023, Gosling said that meeting Mendes and working with her on the film made him want to start a family. “I wasn’t thinking about children before I met her,” he told the publication. “But after I met Eva, I realized that I just didn’t want to have children without her.”
He added: “There were moments at A place behind the pines where we pretended to be a family and I really didn’t want it to be pretend anymore. I realized that that would be a life I would be really happy with… I’m glad I didn’t have control over my destiny that way, because it was so much better than I ever dreamed for myself.”
Meanwhile, Mendes reflected on their time on set with a sweet tribute on social media. In honor of the film’s 10th anniversary in 2023, she shared a carousel of their pictures from the film, writing: “”Luke & Romina. Mi socia @scondito just sent me this telling me it’s been 10 years since this movie came out. It feels like lifetimes have passed.”
While accepting the Kirk Douglas Award for Excellence in Filmmaking at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival in January 2024, Gosling further reflected on working with Mendes, recalling how the film changed his life.
“I met the girl of my dreams, Eva Mendes,” he told the crowd. “I have two dream children. I dreamed of making movies one day, and now movies have turned my life into a dream.”
