Elle King Breaks Her Silence After Drunken Dolly Parton Tribute Performance: ‘I’m Human’

Elle King has put the spotlight on herself after receiving backlash earlier this year when she performed drunkenly at Dolly Parton’s birthday concert.

Back in January, King, 34, was one of a number of country stars who took the stage at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, Tennessee, to celebrate Parton’s 78th birthday. There, she gave a controversial performance that included “about 15” expletives, according to an audience member’s TikTok. King also slurred some of her words while she was on stage, forgot the lyrics to Parton’s “Marry Me” and admitted he had been “punched up.”

Now, on Sunday on Instagram, the “Ex’s & Oh’s” singer spoke about the incident when she shared a video of herself running up and down the concert hall bleachers while practicing.

“To everyone sending me love because I’m human and I’ve already talked to Dolly 💅 I love you,” she captioned the video. “To everyone who told me to kill myself, I love you too.”

Captioning the post, King said, “Oh no, that was my human exposure🫶❤️🫂,” and added the hashtag, “#WWDD,” which apparently stands for “What Would Dolly Do?”

In the days following the Parton tribute, King postponed several concerts and rescheduled them for later this year.

She shared the new dates on her Instagram Story for shows in Shipshewana, Indiana; Waukegan, Illinois; Harris, Michigan; and Dallas, Texas.

“Your tickets will be valid for the new dates. If you are unable to attend the new date, refunds are available at the point of purchase,” King wrote. “See you there!”

Parton, 78, later spoke out about the incident and came to King’s defense in an interview with Extra as she issued a plea to “forgive” her.

“Elle is a really great artist. She’s a great girl and she’s been through a lot of hard things lately,” Parton said. “And she just had a little too much to drink, so let’s forgive and forget and move on, because she felt worse than anyone ever could.”

Earlier this month, King returned to the stage for the first time since the Jan. 22 incident at the Extra Innings Festival in Tempe, Arizona.

She later went on to perform at a string of shows, with her latest appearance in Glasgow on Saturday. On her Instagram Story, King said the Scotland tour was “a dream!”

“The best night. The best place,” she wrote alongside a video she reposted of her on stage.
