How Julia Roberts Thinking She Had a 'Big Butt' Led to This Iconic Detail of Her Pretty Woman Wardrobe

Roberts recalled fun trivia about dressing her character in the classic 1990 rom-com to ‘British Vogue’ as she recounted her ‘Life in Looks’

Julia Roberts reveals some surprising details about one of her most legendary looks Pretty Woman to British Vogue.

Roberts sat down for the magazine’s “Life In Looks” video segment on Thursday and recalled how her character Vivian Ward’s ensemble came about before she met Richard Gere’s character Edward Lewis.

Vivian played a sex worker in the film, and she often wore a blue and white dress, which she sometimes covered with a red jacket tied around her waist. But as Roberts recalled, the extra subject was less a function of her character and more of her own insecurities at the time.

“I thought I had a big butt and that’s why I wore that jacket in the movie,” admitted 56-year-old Roberts.

Roberts also recalled other details about the outfit, which is one of the most memorable ever on film. (Even her niece Emma Roberts paid homage to it in a Halloween costume!)

“The funny thing about this dress is, I think it cost about $20,” she continued. “It was, I think, black and white and the costume designer changed it to make it a little different.”

The Erin Brockovich the star also has a clear memory of footwear. “The boots were really uncomfortable,” she said of the black leather thigh-high boots with a thin high heel.

Roberts has only fond memories of working with Pretty Woman costume designer, Marilyn Vance, who she said created the iconic red dress Vivian wears after her transformation and also created the brown and white polka dot dress from the polo match scene.

“I remember her being very concerned about how I felt in my clothes, because I’m not really comfortable wearing things that bare, and she was very careful and respectful of that,” Roberts recalled.
