Maya Hawke talks about her own experiences with anxiety.
Hawke, 25, personifies the feeling in Pixar’s latest film Inside out 2in which her character Anxiety joins a series of emotions in the brain of a young girl entering her teenage years and beginning to experience more complex emotions.
“I have anxiety, but I don’t have debilitating anxiety or medical grade anxiety,” she said in a promotional interview for the film posted on Disney’s website. “I have, like, a character in me that gets upset and worries, so I was able to really play with that character that I had in my life, let her loose and give her freedom in this role, which was really cool.”
Hawke’s character joins other newcomers such as Envy (Ayo Edibiri), Ennui (Adèle Excharpolous) and Embarrassment (Paul Walter Hauser) in the sequel to the 2015 film. Inside Outwhich introduced and made fan favorites emotions like joy (Amy Poehler), sadness (Phyllis Smith) and anger (Lewis Black).
“The little voice I hear in my head – the one telling me to worry if my shoes are wrong or I’m going to be late for the airport or I’m going to say the wrong thing – whatever that voice is in my head, I just tapped it and let it out my mouth instead of keeping it in my brain,” Hawke said of how she approached playing the character.

The Stranger Things star and musician told Disney in an interview that she knew she had to play the part when she saw a drawing of the character during the audition process.

“And it was incredibly rewarding to see the end result,” she added. “Actually, some of the hand gestures and little movements I did during the voiceover led to the way the character was animated, which was the best thing to see.”

The sequel also features the voices of Tony Hale and Liza Lapiro (Crazy stupid love), who voiced the characters originally portrayed by Bill Hader and Mindy Kaling. “This movie is just a force for good. It’s like a double rainbow,” Hawke told Disney of the film, which has become the highest-grossing release of 2024 in just its first two weeks at the domestic box office.
