How ‘The Masked Singer’ Works: All About Fox’s Celebrity Singing Competition

Masked singer it’s different from any singing competition you’ve seen before.

Not to be confused with American Idol and Vote, which highlights the talents of ordinary people, the Fox reality series invites some of the world’s biggest stars to compete on the main stage. If you’re not one of the millions who’ve watched the show since it premiered in 2019, you might be confused by the singing competition show, which features a dozen or more celebrity contestants each season singing and dancing head-to-toe in costumes that completely obscure their identities.

When Masked singer returning for its 10th season in September 2023, the series had one of its highest-rated premieres in more than a year with 5.8 million viewers tuning in across multiple platforms over seven days, Deadline reported. And if that’s an indication of anything, it’s that viewers at home love to guess the stars behind the masked performance.

How Masked singer work?

Masked singer is an ongoing competition in which a group of masked celebrities compete against each other in costume, with the audience and judges voting on the performances.

The audience and host Nick Cannon are joined by four celebrity panelists – Robin Thicke, Jenny McCarthy, Nicole Scherzinger and Ken Jeong – who do their best to correctly identify each artist based on little clues they receive during each episode.

Although celebrities can use their real voices while singing, during pre-recorded interview clips (which contain clues about their identity), their voices are distorted.

At the end of each episode, the identity of the losing celebrity is finally revealed.

“What I really like about it is that it’s really the only whodunit — or whosangit — show on television and the fact that they’re all famous celebrities. … So the masked people are really the stars of the show,” Thicke said. Hey! News in January 2019.

“Each celebrity can choose their alter ego of who they want to be, and that’s how we try to find out … who they are, based on their costumes, based on their movie credits and also their performances,” McCarthy added.

Its inaugural season ran for 10 episodes and saw 12 masked celebrities face off: La Toya Jackson as the Alien, Tori Spelling as the Unicorn, Joey Fatone as the Rabbit, Gladys Knight as the Bee, Margaret Cho as the Poodle, Donny Osmond as the Peacock, Rumer Willis as the Lion, Ricki Lake as the Raven, Terry Bradshaw as the Deer, Antonio Brown as the Hippo, Tommy Chong as the Pineapple and T-Pain as the Monster.

Rapper T-Pain won the first season of the show, Osmond was second and Knight was third.
