Billy Porter and Luke Evans had a heated argument in a scene from their new drama.

IN Our sonthe actors play husbands whose relationship evolves from marriage to separation to a custody battle over their young son, Owen.

PEOPLE has exclusive footage of a moment in the life of Gabriel (Porter) and Nicky (Evans). As the legal battle over their son’s custody heats up, the two fathers try to negotiate — disagreeing on which of them 8-year-old Owen wants to live with.

“I took care of him every step of the way,” says Porter as Gabriel. And now you’re suddenly ready for parenthood. Well, it’s too late.”

“I’m not visiting my son for the rest of my life,” says Evans as Nicky. “I won’t give it to you.”

Directed by Bill Oliver and written by Oliver and Peter Nickowitz, Our son also stars Christopher Woodley as Owen, as well as Robin Weigert, Andrew Rannells, Kate Burton and Phylicia Rashad.

The synopsis for the “intimate drama” reveals: “Gabriel loves Owen more than anything; Nicky loves Gabriel more than anything. Despite appearances, Gabriel has been unhappy with their marriage for some time and files for divorce, leading to a custody battle that forces them both to face the changing realities of their love for each other and their son.”

At the 2023 Tribeca Film Festival premiere, Evans, 44, told PEOPLE how he stepped into his first major film role as a queer character. “I’ve been ready for that step for years,” he said Beauty and the Beast actor. “I just haven’t found the right story [until now].”

Our sonhe added, was a movie he “hadn’t seen before, and obviously it’s something we all go through… Divorce is as valid for a gay couple as marriage, and I hadn’t actually seen it.”

Porter, 54, joined Evans on stage after the Tribeca premiere in June for a surprise performance of a song he co-wrote.

“Queer people, gay people, just got marriage equality,” Emmy winner Pose said the star Out at that event. “We don’t have anything that talks about how difficult marriage is, period — gay, straight, whatever, nobody really talks about it. And this is an interracial couple, so there is that intersection.”

He added: “What I loved about this script is that it talks about it.”

Our son it’s in theaters on Friday, then in digital release on December 15.
