In 1983, a Royal Mint error meant that the production of some 2p coins included an error that most people would have missed.

A TikTok account known as Thecoincollectoruk has revealed exactly what Brits need to look out for to see if they’re in the pound.

They said: “There are currently three different 2p coins in circulation: the regular 2p Welsh Feather, the 2p Royal Shield of Arms and the one you want to look out for, the new 2p penny.

“Between 1971 and 1981, all 2 pence coins were marked New Pence to celebrate the coin’s entry into circulation.

“However, in 1983 the Royal Mint accidentally minted an extremely limited number of 2p coins.

“These are very rare and cost around £1,000.

“This was also the case with the penny coins during those years.

“However, the error was only made on the 2p in 1983 and the 1p coins were highly minted.”
