On Friday, the Lok Sabha was informed that the process of integration of voter ID cards and Aadhaar records has not yet started. Arjun Ram Meghwal, Law Minister, added that there are no deadlines for integrating Aadhaar data with the voter’s photo ID card. The Government of India has not yet linked voter ID cards and Aadhaar cards. In response to a Lok Sabha question on Friday, Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal gave an update.

There are no set deadlines for linking Aadhaar with the Electoral Photo ID; the process is driven by the process. Further, the Election Commission of India has stated that Aadhar and EPIC are not yet linked. Besides, there is now an extension of one year for filing Form 6B,β said Arjun Ram Meghwal, Law Minister. The written reply reiterated that voter’s agreement was sought for Aadhaar authentication in Form 6B and linking of Aadhaar with voter ID was voluntary. Form 6B (the form that links the Aadhaar card) must now be submitted by the end of March 2024. Responding to a question by Congress MP Pradyut Bordoloi, Meghwal further stated that the names of those whose ID cards are still separated have not been removed from the voter list.
The Union Minister continued, βThe Election Commission of India has reported that it maintains data with a multi-layered security architecture and that election data is encrypted both statically and in transit. The Election Commission of India is responsible under Article 324 of the Constitution for the supervision, management and control of the preparation of the electoral roll.β This development also comes just days after the government revealed its intentions to build a recognizable identity that would be linked to the Aadhaar card and help protect the rights of migrant workers. In addition, the information would be added to the e-Shram database, and all construction workers across the country would have to carry that identity.
