AVID, or Achievement Via Individual Determination, is an elective for middle and high school students. Help prepare students for college by taking notes, asking questions, and communicating with other AVID students. In AVID, one of the most important things you’ll need is a 4-inch organized folder. You will use it every day, not only for AVID, but for all other courses as well. In this wikiHow, you will learn how to set up and maintain an AVID recorder.

Choose a binder. You will need to have a 4 inch folder in AVID. Color is not important unless your AVID instructor requests a specific color. Your AVID teacher will ask you to check your binder frequently to make sure you have everything and that it is properly organized and organized. Some AVID teachers will give you a checklist.

Get folder dividers. You will be required to get two packs of colorful folder dividers. You will be prompted to type “Hour 1”, “Hour 2”, “Hour 3” and so on. Do not write a specific subject (ie “Math,” “English,” or “History”) unless your AVID teacher specifically asks you to.

Choose a pencil case. You will be asked to obtain a three-hole pencil case to fit inside your 4-inch binder. Inside it must have the following elements:

    • At least two sharp pencils (or mechanical pencils)
    • At least two pencils (color shouldn’t matter unless your AVID teacher says otherwise)
    • At least two colored highlighters.
    • Manual pencil sharpener (if you have wooden or colored pencils)
    • Eraser (either a regular block or a pencil tip)
    • Adhesive notes
    • Ice (if you have mechanical pencil
    • Calculator (optional)
    • ruler (optional)
    • Tokens (optional)
    • colored pencils (optional)
    • loose-leaf paper (optional)

Get more notebooks. You will need at least one special notebook for AVID. Whether you use it to take notes during instruction, take notes for other classes, or AVID assignments is up to you or your AVID teacher. In your AVID notebook, write your first and last name and your grade. Sometimes your AVID teacher may ask to see your AVID notebook to make sure you are doing your work. You can also put your other school notebooks in it. If you do, put each one in its own separate folder compartment.

Use Cornell sheets for notes. Your AVID teacher will give you several sheets of AVID Cornell Notes. They are important when taking notes (which is frequent). When you run out, it is your responsibility to ask your teacher for more. He will need to punch them three holes, put them in a dust jacket, folder, or folder pocket. Sometimes you may need to turn them in for your teacher to grade or look at.

Buy loose sheets of paper. It’s always a good idea to have spare paper in your AVID binder. It’s useful when you want to take notes, write tutorial questions, and sometimes just draw. Your AVID teacher may not require you to get one, but there’s no reason not to.

  7. Image titled Install AVID Binder Step 7

Buy tokens. Index cards, such as loose-leaf paper, are not required (unless directed by your AVID teacher). But they’re very useful when you just need to jot down a quick note or question.

  8. Image titled Install AVID Recorder Step 8

Use page protectors. Page protectors are another accessory that your AVID teacher may not require you to have. But they’re good for important notes, tuition application forms, and even supplies.

  9. Image titled Install AVID Binder Step 9

Find a place to do your homework. Your homework will go in one of your binder pockets, in a folder in the back of your binder, or in a dust jacket. If you don’t know where to put it, ask your AVID teacher.

    • Always write the task in the planner along with the due date.
  1. Image titled Install AVID Binder Step 10

Label your supplies. Now that you have all your supplies, it’s time to assemble your binder. Mark as much as you can so you don’t lose anything. Pens, pencils, planners, folders, notebooks, everything.

  2. Image titled Install AVID Recorder Step 11

Add folder dividers. Add each folder separator by hour (ie “Hour 1”, then “Hour 2”, and so on). If you are asked to type the name of your class, do so in order of which class is first, second, third, and so on. The color is not important.

  3. Image titled Setup AVID Recorder Step 12

Add to notebooks. If you choose to put your notebooks in your AVID folder, place them behind the tab they belong in (ie, the math notebook behind the “Math” or “3rd Hour” tab). If you also decided to have an AVID laptop, put it behind your AVID partition or in front of all partitions. Wherever you put it, be sure to effortlessly open your binder and take it out.

  4. Image titled Install AVID Recorder Step 13

Add your pencil case. The pencil case should be in front of your binder (unless your AVID teacher says otherwise). Remember to catalog your supplies each week to make sure you have everything you might need. Another idea is to keep extra supplies (like pens, pencils, crayons, markers, etc.) in your cabinet. That way, if you’re at school and realize you don’t have pens in your bag, you can grab some and not have to worry about having nothing to write with. It’s also nice to have a few extra in case a student forgets a pen or pencil.

  5. Image titled Install AVID Recorder Step 14

Add to your planner. If your school has a planner that can fit in your binder, place it behind your AVID notebook (if you have one) but above the dividers. Always use your planner to keep track of your homework, exams, and anything else. Your teacher may do a “planner check” from time to time to make sure you are using your planner.

  6. Image titled Install AVID Recorder Step 15

Add your AVID contracts. You will get a lot of AVID contracts. Keep them all in one folder in case you need them. You can save them in a folder, page saver, behind the AVID binder clip, or wherever your AVID teacher asks you to place them.

    • AVID contracts are important, so be careful with them and read them from time to time so you don’t forget them.
    • It’s also a good idea to keep your schedule in your AVID binder (either in a page protector, binder, or binder pocket) so that if you forget your schedule, it’s there for you.
  1. Image titled Install AVID Recorder Step 16

Organize your folder. It is very important to keep your AVID folder organized. Your AVID teacher want check it often to make sure everything is organized. If you are not organized, you will not follow the “Binding Agreement” and you may receive a warning.

  2. Image titled Install AVID Recorder Step 17

Organize your notes. Registration is a key part of AVID. You need to keep all your notes organized and clean. Whenever you’re done with your notes, tuck them behind the corresponding folder compartment. Set aside at least 15 minutes a week to clean and organize your binder. Throw away old papers that you no longer need, if the paper is in the wrong place, put it in the right place. Label all notes and papers with your first and last name, date, and class/period.

  3. Image titled Install AVID Recorder Step 18

organize your planner. If you were given a planner, use it for each hour. If you have a “password” page, update it as needed. As mentioned above, your teacher may have a “planner check in”. Try not to look like you have to use your planner, look at it as a good way to keep track of all your tasks.

  • If you do not follow the AVID contract (which you signed at the beginning of the school year), you may be terminated from AVID. ⧼thumbs_response⧽ Helpful 0 Not Helpful 0
