How to Watch The Purge Movies and TV Series in Order — and What to Expect From the Next Purge Film in the Works

Cleaning premiered in 2013, depicting a supposedly utopian America where the crime rate has fallen to its lowest level in decades. The problem is that the country achieves these low crime rates through “purges” – a 12-hour period each year in which all crime, including murder, is legal. During the Purge, the privileged and wealthy hide in their decorated bunkers while the lower classes and minority groups are hunted down by sadistic gangs intent on “cleansing” the country.

in 2023, franchise creator James DeMonaco said Diversity how he got the idea for Cleaning. “I had this little, weird, dark indictment against American gun culture,” he told the publication. “I hate guns. To me, the scariest thing in the world would be a night where everyone was armed and it was legal to use those firearms. For me, there was nothing scarier than that idea.”

Racism, bigotry, and class struggles are also important concepts in the franchise, and as the series continued, these messages became more and more amplified, turning Cleaning into one of the most subversive and progressive horror franchises in modern history.

But his social criticism almost stuck Cleaning of being made. In the same Diversity interview, DeMonaco said studios pitched his script nearly 50 times before Blumhouse finally made it, saying many said the film was “too anti-American.” But the franchise has since grossed more than $533 million worldwide, proving its story resonates with viewers.

The first purge

The first purge is set in 2017 and reveals how it all began. In the film, Staten Island was chosen as the “testing ground” for a new concept – the purge – by the New Founding Fathers of America (NFFA). In 12 hours, all crime on the island will be legal. The fathers say the goal is to allow Americans to vent all their anger in one night, hoping the country will be more peaceful overall. But later in the film, it is revealed that the NFFA has a secret agenda and has sent armed mercenaries to incite violence and kill members of low-income communities. Ultimately, the experiment was considered a success and was expanded across America. The film stars Lex Scott Davis, Marisa Tomei and Joivan Wade.

Election year was released in 2016, capitalizing on the growing anxiety in America leading up to the real election of 2016. Set in 2040, the film features Senator Charlie Roan running for president. But Roan is no ordinary candidate. While cleaning when she was a child, she had to watch her parents brutally killed and is forced to live with that trauma. In her campaign, she ran on an anti-purge platform, promising to end the evil tradition if elected.

But the NFFA wants to make sure that can’t happen. Knowing that their supporters love purges and want Roan dead before the election, the corrupt party allows civilians to kill politicians during that year’s purges, hoping Roan will die before election night.

In 2023 Diversity reported that DeMonaco has completed the script for the sixth film, and the director gave the publication a sneak peek at what it might look like. “IN Eternal cleansingAmerica kind of collapsed,” DeMonaco said, “and really kind of mapped itself to different ideologies. States are based on sexuality, religion and ideology. So, we separated and the state of discord is the worst. We’re going in Cleaning in the other world.”

Cleaning star Frank Grillo also confirmed that a sixth film is in the works during the 2024 interview ScreenRant. “The script is finished and it basically revolves around Leo Barnes, my character,” the actor said during an interview on the red carpet. He also said that the team is waiting to see how much funding the studio will invest in the film before shooting begins. “It’s a matter of how big they want the movie to be, how much money they want to spend on the movie, given that they’ve done a lot in this franchise.”
