How to Watch Transformers Movies in Order (Chronologically and by Release Date)

Transformers began as a Hasbro toy line launched in 1984, with the idea that all toys had parts and pieces that could be moved and rearranged to create a different toy.

In the same year, a transformers a cartoon was released showing the battle between the good Autobots led by Optimus Prime and the evil Decepticons led by Magatron. The series made the toy line incredibly popular, and in 1986 the franchise got its first movie, Transformers: The Movie. However, the animated film failed at the box office and fell into relative oblivion.

For the next several decades, Transformers continued to receive new cartoon adaptations and direct-to-video movies, but in 2007, Michael Bay revived the franchise with his live-action transformers movie. The original film was a huge hit, and after grossing over $709 million at the box office, a sequel soon followed. Since then, there have been a total of eight transformers movies, with more on the way.

Watching the movies chronologically can be a bit confusing since the two most recent movies — 2018. Bumblebee and in 2023 Transformers: Rise of the Beast — do not follow continuity and now serve as predecessors and restarting.

Bumblebee used the same Bumblebee Autobot from the Bay movies, and in a 2018 interview with SlashFilmproducer Lorenzo di Bonaventura said there were “20 years” between them. Bumblebee and the original from 2007.

But the events of that film and its sequel, Rise of the Beastdo not add to what is shown in transformersand until time Rise of the Beast premiered in 2023, Bonaventura changed the tone. Yahoo! News reported from Rise of the beast‘ Premiere in Singapore that the producer called the film “a prequel and a sequel”, and director Steven Caple Jr. he described it as “a fresh new look”.
