The controlled explosion was right on the river’s edge at a commercial site in Silvertown, and residents nearby captured it on video and heard loud popping noises.

But the fire spread “out of control” and the London Fire Brigade was called in to put it out, they revealed in a statement.

A video posted on social media shows a fire in the east of the city burning today around 8 p.m.

People across the Thames in the music hall said they could hear bangs and could see smoke.

One recorded video of the fire shows it burning before erupting in a bright orange explosion, reportedly the third eruption of the night.

Another witness said they heard “absolutely huge and very loud explosions” next to their apartment and that a shipping container was on fire.

London Fire Brigade said half the cars and lorries were on fire and the fire was now “under control”.

They said: “Four fire engines and around 25 firefighters are tackling the blaze in an open yard on Dock Road in Silvertown.

“The brigade was called in 1951. Crews from Poplar, Millwall, Shadwell, East Greenwich attend the scene.”

Crews will remain at the scene until the end of the night.

Metohija police said in a statement that they are aware of reports of explosions.

They said: “This was part of a pre-planned shoot in the Canning Town area of E16.

“There is no risk to the public.”

Some witnesses said a BBC shipping container was on fire, while one image showed a BBC World News truck earlier at the site.

The corporation filmed near the site last weekend which included a “loud explosion”, the Royal Borough of Greenwich said.

The BBC has been contacted for comment.
