Hugh Edmeades is an English auctioneer who is popular for replacing Richard Madley in the IPL auction. In 2022, it was also announced that the Indian Premier League (IPL) auction will be held in Kochi on December 23, 2022.

early work
In 1978, he joined Christie’s to learn about antique furniture. After working there for a while, he was appointed head of the furniture department when his boss left. He said he would not lead the department but would become an auctioneer. In his first days at Christie’s, he was afraid of going on stage and speaking in front of people, but after a crash course, he gained the confidence to become a highly successful auctioneer. In 1978, he became director of international auctions at Christie’s. In 2004, he auctioned off 88 guitars owned by Eric Clapton. In 2005, he conducted auctions for TV celebrity auctioneer BBC’s Children in Need. In 2008, he made $5.6 million for Nelson Mandela’s children’s charity at a Nelson Mandela birthday event in London. In 2016, he quit his job at Christie’s to become an independent auctioneer.
IPL Auction
In 2019, he was appointed as the auctioneer of the Indian Premier League by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
He succeeds Richard Madley, who has been the IPL auctioneer since 2008. In an interview, he talked about this and said,
12 years ago, I was contacted to inquire about hosting the first IPL auction. But I have other commitments to fulfill. Therefore, I cannot consider this proposal. But I’m glad they reconsidered me for this auction after all these years. “
