Hugh McKean, a prominent politician, died on October 30 at the age of 55. Republicans in the Colorado House of Representatives announced the news on Sunday with the following statement:
“We are deeply saddened to announce the sudden death of House Minority Leader Hugh McKean.” Hugh dedicated himself to promoting the best of Colorado and will be greatly missed. Funeral arrangements are underway and details will be announced once completed.”

Hugh McKean died of an acute myocardial infarction, commonly known as a heart attack, according to the Larimer County Coroner’s Office. After a professional examination, the natural cause of death was determined. According to Hugh’s deputy chief of staff, Roger Hudson, McKean groaned from discomfort on the left side of his body, which could have been caused by an injury he sustained while working from home.
According to Hudson and Representative Colin Larson, Hugh’s discomfort worsened until Sunday morning when he phoned his traveling companion, Amy Parks, at his residence. Colorado Democratic Senator Kerry Donovan also expressed grief, saying:
“That’s terrible news about @hmckean. All the people closest to him are in my thoughts. We always laugh about something, no matter the subject or disagreement. That will be missed.
All about Hugh McKean
McKean, born October 27, 1967, was elected to represent the 51st District of the Colorado House of Representatives in November 2016. Among other measures, he supported proposals to improve transportation in the North. Colorado and help county governments recover from disasters, including making changes to the statute governing training requirements for county sheriffs.
McKean began his tenure in Loveland after being elected to the Loveland City Council in 2009.
