Human Skull and Bones Found by Hunter in Pennsylvania Woods

A hunter found human remains in a Pennsylvania forest on Tuesday, Pennsylvania State Police said in a news release.

The remains have not been identified. Recent discoveries included a skull, more than 20 bones and clothing, but not the entire skeleton, according to KDKA. The remains were found in a wooded area off Route 422 near Ambrosia Road in Lawrence County, Pennsylvania.

In addition to the fact that the remains have not been identified, authorities say that neither the sex nor the age of the person has been determined. They speculate that the remains have been in the forest for at least several years, reports KDKA.

Police in Pulaski Township, Pennsylvania, received a call around 3 p.m. from a person who was hunting in the area, reports KDKA. A hunter reported finding a human skull.

When state troopers, crime scene investigators and representatives from the Lawrence County Coroner’s Office arrived at the scene, they found other bones nearby, WKBN reports.

The investigation was then taken over by the state police. Authorities guarded the area to keep the land safe from passers-by from Tuesday night into Wednesday morning, the New Castle News reported. State police, Lawrence County Coroner Richard “RJ” Johnson and Lawrence County cadaver search and rescue dogs continued to search the woods for additional remains and evidence, the agency reported.

PSP Corporal Randy Guy told the New Castle News that authorities found teeth among the remains and will hire a forensic odontologist to help identify the person.

While the investigation is ongoing, state police are asking the public if they know anyone who may be missing to contact officers.

A spokesman for Pennsylvania State Police and the Lawrence County Coroner’s Office did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for additional information Thursday.
