Hundreds of Medications, Including Ozempic and Mounjaro, Have Increased in Price in 2024, Research Shows

Pharmaceutical companies have raised prices for hundreds of drugs in 2024, new research shows.

46Brooklyn Research, a nonprofit drug pricing analyst group, recently released data showing that some drugmakers have already raised the prices of their drugs this year, including the popular drugs Ozempic and Mounjara, with some increasing by 9% or more.

Companies including Novo Nordisk — which makes Ozempic, a drug designed to help diabetics regulate blood sugar that has also been found to be effective for weight loss — and Eli Lilly, which sells the similar drug Mounjaro, were on the list.

According to the data, the price of Ozempic rose 3.5% to $984.29 for a month’s supply, while Mounjaro rose 4.5% to about $960 for a month’s worth of the drug.

Other drugs that have seen price increases include the autoimmune disease drug Enbrel, the pain reliever Oxycontin, the blood thinner Plavix and the antidepressant Wellbutrin.

Enbrel was up 5%, while Oxycontin was up 9%, Plavix was up 4.7% and Wellbutrin was up 9.9%, the data added.

46Brooklyn’s data, however, does not fully reflect how much a consumer pays for the drug, as its analysis is based on the price drug manufacturers charge those who distribute the drugs to pharmacies, the company said.

Consumers may sometimes pay less due to factors such as insurance or other discounts such as rebates.

46Brooklyn also highlighted about twenty medicines that became cheaper at the beginning of the new year.

According to the nonprofit organization, the erectile dysfunction drug Cialis (19%) and the antidepressant Prozac (18%) fell, as did the chronic obstructive pulmonary disease drug Advair, whose price fell from 22% to 60%, depending on the formulation. .
