On Wednesday, Huw Edwards was named the star of BBC News by his wife Vicky Flint, at the heart of allegations of paying for pornographic images of a young person.
Several BBC stars have shied away from the allegations prior to Huw’s appointment, and now several of his former and current colleagues have reacted to the news. Speaking on BBC News, the group’s culture editor, Katie Razzall, described it as “a huge shock to viewers” and journalists at the BBC.
“This is dramatic news, this is a man who embodies the values of the BBC, he is the face of the BBC, he has held hands with viewers in so many important parts of history. our nation – whether it’s elections, royal events, the death of the Queen or the coronation of the king,” she said.
John Simpson, the BBC’s world news editor, took to Twitter to quote a police statement that no further action would be taken against the Welsh journalist. John wrote: “I am deeply sorry to everyone involved: the Edwards family, the complainant and Huw himself. No criminal charges have been committed so this is purely a personal tragedy for all involved. officials. Let’s hope the press leaves them alone. I’m completely alone.”

Dan Walker, former star of the BBC Breakfast programme, wrote on Twitter: “This is a terrible situation and will be a huge shock to many. Huw Edwards is clearly not in a good place. I just hope that anyone who needs help – from all sides – will have the time, space and support they need to heal. wound.”

Jon Sopel, former host at News said: “This is a terrible and shocking episode, without crime but perhaps a complicated private life. Now it doesn’t seem very private. I hope it brings something out. worth thinking about. They really need it. I wish @thehuwedwards all the best.”

In a statement confirming that Huw was the host at the heart of the allegations, his wife said: “In light of recent news about the ‘BBC presenter’, I present on behalf of my husband Huw Edwards making this statement, after 5 years of extreme stress, difficult days for our family, I do this primarily out of concern for his mental health and to protect our children.
“Huw suffers from serious mental health problems. As is well documented, he has been treated for major depression in recent years. Events of the past few days have made matters worse. much worse, he had another severe episode and is now admitted to hospital receiving care at the hospital where he will stay for the foreseeable future.
“When he is well enough to do so, he intends to respond to published stories. To be clear, Huw was first informed that there were allegations against him on Thursday of the week. in advance. Given Huw’s circumstances and condition, I would like to please respect the privacy of my family and others involved in these disturbing incidents. I know Huw is deeply sorry for being very many colleagues have been affected by recent media speculation. We hope this statement puts an end to it.”
