Thora Birch, the eldest child of Jack Birch and Carol Connors, grew up in Los Angeles. Breza is of German-Jewish, Scandinavian, French-Canadian and Italian descent, and his ancestry is German-Jewish, Scandinavian, French-Canadian and Italian. Birch appeared in commercials for Burger King, California Raisins, Quaker Oats (with Wilford Brimley) and Vlasic Pickles in the late 1980s. She made her debut in the 1988 sci-fi comedy Purple People Eater, for which she won the Youth Film Award and the Young Artist Award for “Best Young Actress Under 9”. In 1988, she appeared as “Thora” in an episode of Doogie Howser, MD and was introduced as Molly on the NBC television series Day By Day. The show ran on NBC for two seasons and earned her two Young Artist Award nominations.

Birch starred in the 1990 comedy Parenthood, based on the 1989 film of the same name. It aired on NBC for one season before it was cancelled. The following year, she starred in the TV series Paradise alongside Don Johnson, Melanie Griffith and Elijah Wood. She beat more than 4,000 other young applicants to the audition. Roger Ebert said she performed the role with “strong, simple appeal” and went on to receive another nomination for a Young Artist Award.
