After 68 years of serving consumers in the community, Jean Ingram has stepped down. And the people she left behind realize that no one will ever be like her.

After graduating from Ayr Grammar School aged just 15, Jean, now 83, began her career in retail. She has run her business, Brass Hopper and Table Topper, with an iron rod of respect over the years.

While her husband Alex made headlines as an Ayr United legend, Jean became known as the town’s source of gift ideas.

But even she admits that the firm hold of the new High Street has finally caught up with her devious ways.

She noted: “I guess the writing has been on the wall for a while. Much of Ayr has been left behind as consumption patterns have changed.

“I have always been very lucky to have loyal customers, and still do, but last year I started to see a real difference in the way the business was run.

“I’m going to be a very busy chump trying to make this work,” I thought when I got to that point.

At Newmarket Street and Queen’s Court, where she has worked for the last forty years, Jean has long been admired. Over the years, her properties have become favorite destinations for buyers in the community. She said: “I can’t look back with regret.

I was once proud when the Ayrshire Post called Newmarket Street ‘the jewel in Ayr’s crown’, but I realize the time has come to forget that. When companies like Watt Brothers struggle to succeed, you know it’s game over.

“A rethink and a more coordinated approach with the municipality is needed if we want commerce to flourish in the city.” Traders from different companies gathered to wish Jean a warm welcome on Friday.

Neighboring Cafe Le Monde, run by Nino and Karen Pajovic, coordinated the flower deliveries from the neighbors.

“Jean is an institution,” added Nino, “and he was always very welcoming to us when we went out.” “There will never be another like her, and to trade for that long is truly amazing,” Karen continued.

Jean was the inspiration behind everything on this street, according to Jim McSherry, innkeeper at Wee Windaes on Newmarket Street. Without her, Ayr would be so much poorer and she will be sorely missed. Jools Gift Shop owner Linda Mitchell continued: “She is one of a kind and we all love her so much.
