On Monday, September 12, 2022, the survival thriller Squid Game received top honors at the 2022 Emmys. It was an important night for the Korean entertainment industry. Lee Jung-Jae was named Best Actor in a Drama Series, while Hwang Dong-hyuk was named Best Director in a Drama Series. While the show took a decade to come to fruition, two Emmy nominations made the wait well worth it. Lee Jung-jae, 49, became the first Asian to win Best Actor at the Emmy Awards and the fourth to win an Emmy for acting. He defeated Jason Bateman of Ozark, Brian Cox of The Succession and Adam Scott (Severance) of The Succession.
Hwang Dong-hyuk, the designer of Squid Game, is another Korean who made history on the same night. The screenwriter and director won the best director award for a TV series. He won over the directors of Ozark, Severance, Succession, and Yellowjackets. It is also the first non-English program to win this award.

Hwang Dong-hyuk gave an emotional speech when the Squid Game won.
After Bong Joon-Parasite ho won the Oscar two years ago, September 12, 2022 will be remembered as one of Korea’s most important nights. Squid Game, Netflix’s most popular show, has won two major Primetime Emmy Awards, making the nation proud. The Netflix thriller was the first non-English TV series to be nominated for an Emmy Award in the Best Drama Series category. Lee Jung-jae, the series’ star, and creator Hwang Dong-hyuk won best actor and best director. After that, the audience of the Emmys gave the winners a standing ovation.
Hwang Dong-hyuk shared his win with the crowd and viewers during his acceptance speech.
“I don’t believe I’ve made history on my own since you invited Squid Game to the Emmys tonight and opened the door for us.” As a result, I guess I have to say we all made history together.”
Lee Jung-jae constantly thanked the academy and the public after becoming the first Asian actor to win the Best Actor award in a non-English speaking program. Hwang Dong-hyuk’s thriller received 14 nominations and earned six nominations at the 2022 Emmys, two in the main category and four at the Creative Arts Emmy.
The Netflix thriller also won Outstanding Special Effects for an Episode, Outstanding Stunt Performance, and Outstanding Production Design for Narrative Contemporary Show, making Lee Yoo-mi the female lead. First Korean actor to win an award (One hour or more).
Meanwhile, Squid Game was nominated for three awards: Best Serial Drama, Best Screenplay for a Serial Drama, Supporting Actress in a Serial Drama (Jung Ho-yeon) and Actor supporting character in the TV series (Jung Ho-yeon) (Park Hae) -soo, Oh Young-soo). The second season of The Ink Game is currently in the writing phase.
