I was one of the biggest music stars of the noughties but family tragedy traumatised me & I lost thousands on ‘betting’

MIKE Skinner seemed to be having a good time when he was having huge chart success with popular band The Streets in his noughties.

But away from the glitz and glamor of the music industry, the star revealed his life is “incredibly traumatic” behind the scenes.

The Streets remained a consistent force on the charts in the mid-2000s thanks to a string of top hits and albums.

Mike and his fellow members were known for their importance in bringing alternative hip hop to the top of the charts and radio playlists at a time when the genre was often shunned.

Among their many hits were 2004’s Fit but You Know It and the number one song Dry Your Eyes, as well as When You Wasn’t Famous from their third album.

Despite the ups and downs that have come with his huge success, Mike has opened up in a new interview with The Independent about the struggles he faced and how it led to him losing thousands of pounds.

Amidst the pressures of fame, Mike recalled a period when his mental health hit rock bottom following the rapid deaths of his father, aunt and niece.

He told the statement that he felt “incredibly traumatized” at the time.

Mike added of the intense time period: “I wouldn’t want to do it again. Which seems crazy – to be on the charts, to be in the papers…”

Elsewhere, he admitted to the publication that he had lost tens of thousands of pounds as a result of betting on the spread at the height of his fame.

This caused him to fall even further into a downward spiral.

Spread betting is a speculative form of betting where the bettor does not own or control the stock or commodity in question.

In Mike’s case, he found himself betting on football. As a sports fan, you understand that some teams are better than others when betting on the spread.

Last week, Mike caused a stir with his unforgettable appearance on BBC’s Breakfast, which fans called “painfully awkward”.

Before Naga Munchetty, 48, could even introduce him, Mike pointed around the new BBC Breakfast studio and a picture of Salford Quays and said: “Can I just say this isn’t a real representation of Salford, Manchester.

“I’ve just come from Salford, Manchester and it doesn’t look like it.”

Naga pointed out, “Well, it’s raining this morning,” and Charlie asked, “Are you talking about the weather?”

Mike then threw his hands up in the air and said, “Yeah mom, I did it.”

After an awkward pause, Naga asked, “Do you think your mom would be impressed?”

The 44-year-old replied: “My mum is eternally impressed.”

These days, Mike has found a new sense of contentment for himself and his two children.

He recently finished work on a decade-long film project – a release that coincided with The Streets’ new album.

Mike said: “I don’t feel like I’m being watched all the time anymore, which is great.

“On my second or third album, you’d walk in somewhere and people would start talking about you. You didn’t know what people were going to do.”
