I went to see Barbie early – and here’s my honest review

HELLO! got pink this week as Barbiemania swept the UK, and we joined the pink, Stetson-dressed crowd (scattered with copies of Ken in spots) for a quick preview of the film in Quang London’s Leicester campus will set the mood for the summer of 2023.

Right from the beginning, the credits of the black rock are narrated by Dame Helen Mirren 2001: Space Adventure on the beautiful subject of Billy Eilish (What was I created for?) with the exception of the end credits, this is a movie that almost achieves the impossible – to be all for all women (and some men).

It’s a serious investigation into sexual politics cleverly disguised as a very fun, vibrant, and relentlessly pink celebration of all things Barbie. A movie that uses the now-64-year-old Mattel doll’s pedals to jump, spin, and work toward some big ideas with plenty of savvy winks for a modern audience.

Full disclosure: I didn’t have Barbie as a kid. I’m the Action Man boy, a binary choice imposed on me from time to time that I let go by dressing him in a football jersey instead of all that military stuff .

But I know Barbie. Everyone knows Barbie, right? And people laugh/ignore Ken? And there is a central theme here Barbie: The Movie and a movie starring Margot Robbie brilliantly and Ryan Gosling is just her boyfriend in the title.

So a little background here. Margot’s Barbie is just one of many Barbies living and running Barbieworld, where everything plastic is perfect and perfect today, just as it was yesterday and will be perfect tomorrow forever. . And Ken is one of many Kens who enjoy—no, amused is a misnomer—accept the Barbie candy status while not getting the physical or emotional closeness of it.

But this is Barbieworld, where real life, with all its worries and hurts, cannot interfere. So why did the stereotypical Barbie start thinking about death? And why is her heel touching the ground instead of wearing heels?

It’s complicated, so I won’t bore you with the plot, but she basically has to go into the real world and sort out some stuff, but obviously, it’s a hole in the continuity. space-time (you notice how Mattel and Marvel start and end with the same string? Suffice it to say) and things start to go horribly wrong. And Will Ferrell is doing Will Ferrell’s job as head of Mattel and it’s all really, really trendy.

Soooo… take a deep breath. Those are already four big names. The cast of this movie is officially gorgeous. They even have a new Doctor Who (Ncuti Gatwa) as one of the Kens. Kate McKinnon is a phenomenon as Weird Barbie. America Ferrera is an admirable adult Barbie fan. Barbies and Kens of all shapes and colors turn out to be A-list movie stars (plus Dua Lipa, who’s somewhere in there). And don’t even let me start with “Allan, Ken’s friend,” played by Michael Cera.

And everyone seems to be having a lot of fun doing it. And that’s a great achievement by director Greta Gerwig – this movie is fun with a capital F (as for the F, there’s a very cute moment that involves an obscenity in the movie, but I’m going don’t damage it).

Anyway, I love it. The rest of Leicester Square loved it, judging by the cosplay and the applause that reverberated throughout the cinema after the screening.

bad side of? It is very binary and heteronormative. There’s transgender Barbie, guys, but not in this movie. There are some lightly feminine scenes involving Rhea Perlman as a ghost. White. Nice to meet Rhea Perlman! And Allan’s presentation comes dangerously close to the stereotype of a homosexual.

But I guess that’s part of the message of the movie – because everything about President Barbie, Astronaut Barbie, Lawyer Barbie, Doctor Barbie, Barbie is a stereotype in a world that’s not real, molded. sample. She can break the mold, and so can you. End the message.

Barbie, 12A, 114 minutes, directed by Greta Gerwig. In the July 21 compilation.
