Camelot said that “at the moment” Joan bought the ticket, its computer system had pre-determined her prize to be £10.
But a “technical issue” on the day caused “various graphical animations” to flash on some players’ screens, the High Court heard.
Two numbers with a fixed prize of £10 were displayed on Joan’s screen with the message: “Congratulations, you’ve won £10.”
But the court heard that two other matching numbers – with a certain £1m prize – also appeared due to a technical problem.
Joan sued National Lottery operator Camelot for £1 million after it paid out just a tenner.
She sought summary judgment in her favor because Camelot could not win at trial.
Camelot’s lawyer, Philip Hinks, said it was only responsible for paying “the outcome of the ticket predetermined” by its computer system.
He said there was a “substantial” factual dispute as to what outcome was predetermined.
Judge Jay denied Joan’s motion for summary judgment – before ruling in Camelot’s favor.
After studying Camelot’s terms and conditions, he discovered that Joan “didn’t win the second million pound prize”.
In other lottery news, a woman realized she had won big after hearing a song through her neighbor’s wall.
