Ian Mcshane News
One of the best actors working now is Ian McShane. You would have noticed if you had seen Doctor Thorne on Sunday because his mere presence raised the entire production by thousands of notches.
It appeared as though McShane had made the decision to appear in an entirely different show than the others. Doctor Thorne was little more than a drab, wet Sunday night filler without him. However, the moment he appeared as Sir Roger Scatcherd, rolling his eyes and moving his jaw, the performance erupted into life. McShane came close to making Doctor Thorne enjoyable, but it may have took him gobbling down huge mouthfuls of scenery and shoving them back into poor Tom Hollander’s face at every chance.
Not really news, this. If McShane is involved, you will be standing next to a jet engine. He made Al Swearengen from Deadwood a timeless figure for the twenty-first century. He accorded Kings a gravitas that it didn’t quite merit. He’ll be fantastic in American Gods.
The length of time it took to hire him was the one unexpected aspect of his most recent Game of Thrones casting. McShane maintained an incredibly cool demeanour throughout Hot Rod, a ridiculous movie about a humorous skateboarder.
However, a small but audible part of me emerged when I saw him in Doctor Thorne, just as it did when I saw him in Deadwood, Hot Rod, Sexy Beast, and Pirates of the Caribbean 4.
Because, despite his talent as an actor, McShane will never again play a peculiar and fascinating character like that. Since Lovejoy hasn’t been on the air since 1994, it’s been difficult to articulate the peculiar phenomena that it was at the time.
In the television series Lovejoy, the cheeky antiques trader wore a varnished tumour-style hairstyle and dressed like Jeremy Clarkson from the Robot Wars era. If you were to trust his advertising stills, he spent the vast portion of his life staring quizzically at vases. He appeared as though he had been pebble-dashed in the face on a regular basis since he was a little child. He was a detective, a criminal, and a moral vigilante in equal measure, albeit his only truly distinguishable talent was the ability to gauge how much.
The programme was produced in a time when a television antihero may simply be a brat and not the physical embodiment of all human weakness. It was an all-encompassing, rustic, unabashedly populist comedic drama that got the mark exactly.
If you approached any 60-year-old woman in the UK today and started humming the programme’s theme song, they would probably still swoon double with passion. The show sought a charming rogue, and it produced one so effortlessly.
