iCarly Star Miranda Cosgrove Responds To Jennette McCurdy’s Charges

According to recent reports, showrunner Miranda Cosgrove has addressed allegations from her former co-star Jennette McCurdy, who accused an anonymous Nickelodeon executive of abuse. On Aug. 5, Vanity Fair published an excerpt from McCurdy’s upcoming book, I’m Glad My Mom Died, which includes her claims. McCurdy said in her book that she was exposed to abuse while working on Nickelodeon productions in which she participated. Cosgrove has now opened up about her experiences while working on iCarly in a recent statement to The New York Times.

Miranda Cosgrove claimed that McCurdy’s upbeat personality and sense of humor on the iCarly set kept her from suspecting her co-star was going through anything. She stated:

“You don’t expect that from a guy who makes everyone in the room laugh.”

What did Miranda Cosgrove have to say about Jennette McCurdy’s accusations against “The Creator”?

Miranda Cosgrove told The New York Times that she could not believe that her co-star Jennette McCurdy had such unpleasant experiences. Cosgrove elaborated:

“You’re so in your own brain when you’re young. You have no idea how hard life is for the people around you.”

The 29-year-old actress said she was unaware of McCurdy’s alleged bad experience on set. In her upcoming biography, McCurdy alleges she was subjected to abusive and inappropriate behavior by a Nickelodeon executive known as “The Creator.” Although McCurdy did not identify the person, it is highly likely that it is iCarly creator and executive producer Dan Schneider.

In addition to McCurdy’s current allegations, multiple sources said in 2018 that Schneider was fired from Nickelodeon following numerous complaints against him. According to sources, these complaints were filed because of his aggressive behavior towards the producer and screenwriter. However, Schneider later denied such rumors, telling Deadline:

“I could not, nor would I have had so many long-standing friendships and continued loyalty from distinguished people if I had mistreated my performers of any age, especially minors.”

Jennette McCurdy’s allegations point to a possible reason why she didn’t return for the series’ 2021 revival.

Therefore, the omission of Jennette McCurdy from the return of iCarly in 2021 to Paramount+ could be attributed to her previous involvement with the program. Miranda Cosgrove told E! News last year that she came out with her former co-stars in an attempt to get them involved in the revival. McCurdy, however, refused.

Miranda Cosgrove then said:

“We all phoned her individually and really wanted her to be there.” But at the same time, I’m happy for her because I know her life has taken a new direction and she loves what she’s doing right now… So I believe we’ve all achieved what we probably set out to do.”

Jennette McCurdy appears to have retired from acting after producing three short films. The last Nickelodeon program she worked on was Sam & Cat. Her most recent credited acting performance was in the short film The First Lady in 2018. Her most recent venture was a one-woman show called I’m Glad My Mom Died, which she performed in several theaters in Los Angeles and New York before the outbreak. A book based on her program will be released on August 9.
