Iconic high street chain which had 807 stores before closing and was loved by shoppers for 100 years ‘may return to UK’

AN ICONIC high street chain that has been loved by customers for more than 100 years could be returning to the UK.

The store disappeared from our streets in 2009, closing its 807 branches across the country.

Famous for its selection of sweets and bargains, the shop was once as British as fish and chips – before it fell victim to the credit crunch.

But now Woolworths could be making a comeback as the German chief executive says new UK stores are on his “bucket list”.

Roman Heini leads the expansion of Woolworth Germany in Europe, according to the Mirror.

Mr Heini said: “I don’t know of any brand where it will be as highly recognized as it is in Britain without having stores.

“We have secured all the brands for the brand for the whole of Europe, so we can do business if we choose.

“It could be in the mix for the medium to long term future.”

Woolworth Germany also went bankrupt in 2009, but has bounced back, expanding into Austria and Poland.

It has more than 600 stores, does not sell online and specializes in home products and own-brand clothing, including underwear.

Mr Heini, who was previously head of Aldi and Lidl, told trade magazine Retail Week: “There are over 300 million potential consumers in Europe and there is no dominant player.

“The market is still there to be divided between potential players for the future.”

It comes after we revealed the exact locations where beloved store, Wilko, will return.

Hearts were broken across the country when beloved Wilko announced it would be closing all its stores.

But now it’s back, launching new stores across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland that will “offer customers everything they need”.
