I’m a single mum-of-two on UC – the job centre hounds me to work but I can’t get childcare – I’m not a benefit scrounger

A mother-of-two has revealed she is hounded by the employment service every day but unable to get a job because she cannot provide childcare.

Darcie Wharton, 23, who is a mother of two young children, Lily and Jude, explained that she is not a ‘benefits smuggler’ and would love to go back to work, but just can’t get a place at nursery or a nanny.

A frustrated woman took to social media to reveal her situation, while slamming “benefit cheats”.

She said: “One thing I’d like to know is how people get away with kicking the p**s off the benefits system.

“And that’s something that really annoys me because I could count on many hands the amount of people I know who are genuinely taking the p**s off the benefits system and they can sit on their a** and do nothing all day and the job center you leave it alone.

“And then there are people like me, whose plan all along was to go back to work when both my children were in full school, because they are 16 months apart in age, which means that by September 2025 they will both be in full school . school time.

“And there’s me who has lasted until that moment and I’m literally punished, harassed and hounded by the job center to find a job, where I pick up my phone and show them more people, I’m talking about more than 10 nannies I contacted and said ‘you have any room?’ and they actually laughed at me and said ‘no’.”

Darcie said it would be impossible to drop by and pick up and continued: “My daughter will be going to mainstream school in September, my son will be at school half a day in September and they want me to find work around dropping my daughter off at school, then or dropping my son to morning or afternoon school and then picked them both up.

“I could end up doing four pickups and returns a day, and they want me to work about 30 hours.

“And they expect me to have a family that can pick up parts and that can do my dirty work for me — that can pick up, drop off, have them while I go to work.

“I’m sorry, but news is fast, not everyone has family willing or able to help.”

Darcie explained that she had no parents to help her, adding: “Their dad’s parents still work full time, my grandparents are too old and I don’t have any other family.

I got pregnant the first time I had sex and gave birth at 14 and 16 – people assume I’m on benefits but you can’t get them that young either

“So why are they harassing and chasing me to go back to work and telling me that they will take my money if I can’t find a job?

“I wanted to go to work for such a long time but it was so impossible to find childcare and the exact words of the woman at the job center were: ‘They’ve put funding into getting people back into work but they haven’t put the same level of funding into childcare to children’.

“Why is this my problem? It actually gets to me a lot because I try everything I can and do everything they ask of me, but I get nowhere.

“They give me jobs and tell me to apply for jobs that are not possible. if I don’t have childcare and I don’t have help, I don’t have it.

“I can’t leave my children at the age of three and four and go to work, I can’t just leave him at home, someone has to look after him.”

I was literally fined, harassed and hounded by the job center to find a job

The content creator claimed that even going into education wouldn’t work, as she shared: “I was looking at the education side of things because obviously you can be in education, and access a higher education course, which is what I wanted to do, because it’s just 12 hours at college or university, and the rest is homework, studying at home, they then want me to find a job in 6 hours. So I’m no better than studying.

“I ran out of options. I applied for night shift jobs with no success. It is literally such a mess.

“And before anyone literally attacks me with their smart comments, I didn’t ask to be a single parent.

“That obviously wasn’t the plan and I didn’t expect it to happen. I’ve been in it my whole life, the other side obviously hasn’t.”

In another video, Darcie responded to a comment that read ‘Isn’t it your choice to have them? Why do you think you can have children and not support them?’ and explained: “You are obviously fat. Let’s get back to basics, shall we?”

Darcie then confirmed: “I’ve been working, whether it’s part-time or full-time, since I was 15.

“At one point I was studying, and I also had two jobs.

“I had children. I gave birth to my first child, I stayed on maternity leave, I came back when she was eight months old and I worked from home.

“And then I gave birth to my second, 16 months apart, and I stayed home with him on maternity leave.

“And then my partner got a second job, which brought us more money, which meant I could stay at home with the kids, and he could work full-time and take care of his family, and I would stay at home , she took care of them and did things with her and carried them here, there and everywhere until they went to school.

“I would encourage everyone, if they can, to stay home with their kids and raise them and do everything they can and cram as much as they can and make as many memories as they can before they go to school. I encourage it for everyone.”

But after she was left alone, Darcie admitted: “He decided to leave for his own reasons. Fair. Which then meant that I was a single parent with two children under the age of three that I had to support at the time.

“I don’t see that you would attack him for the same reason. Yes, to be fair, he works full time, but it’s all on me, on my shoulders. I have to find a daycare for those kids.

“It’s not the case that I don’t want to support my children or that I think I can have children and not support them.

“I went to pick them up because I was with a man who was well paid, and I didn’t have to work.

“I had the luxury of staying at home and taking care of them as a mother.”

I have no problem finding a job and attending work. The problem is finding a daycare so I can attend work

Darcie Wharton

The red-haired mother admitted: “I want to go back to work. I would love nothing more than to go back to work and take care of my children on my own, which I am trying to do.

“But there is no kindergarten available in my area. Nurseries and babysitters, because the government has put resources into getting people back to work, but they haven’t put the same amount of resources into childcare services, so childcare is limited.

“So is it my fault or is it the government’s fault? Because I think it’s the government’s fault, not me.

“So before you leave your ****ing comments, what you said is irrelevant and doesn’t really make sense.

“It is not a problem for me to find a job and attend work. The problem is finding a daycare so I can attend work.”

She then asked the haters, “What would you like me to do? Would you want me to go to work and leave my two young children under the age of four at home all day to fend for themselves?

“Is that an option? Is that what you want me to do?”

REACTION OF USERS OF SOCIAL NETWORKS

At the same time, many other parents spoke openly about their problems.

One mother said: “It’s so hard being a single parent and finding work between school hours.”

Another added: “It’s exactly the same situation here. I worked six days a week after my children, a private rented house, had everything they wanted. One day he went to work and never came back. I lost everything.”

Meanwhile, a third commented: “Very true, my little girl goes to daycare, but the opening hours are only a few hours.

“Nobody’s going to hire me for a few hours. A 21-year-old being chased by UC is a joke.”
