Desperate to get sober, Gazza admits he is now a “sad drunk” who drinks “in the house” instead of going out.

He told Jake Humprey’s High Performance Podcast: “People know Paul Gascoigne, but Gazza, nobody knows. Even me sometimes.

“When I’m really sad, that’s when I take a drink to cheer myself up.”

Considered one of the best footballers of his generation, the Gateshead-born midfielder made 57 appearances for England.

His most notable moment came at Italia ’90 when he cried after being booked before England’s epic World Cup semi-final penalty shoot-out loss to West Germany.

But it wasn’t until the former Newcastle, Spurs, Lazio and Rangers legend retired in 2004 that his life spiraled out of control.

He explained: “The drink was over when I finished the game. I don’t think I let any of the managers down, the players or the fans you know.”

Gazza’s battle with alcohol has landed him in jail or the cell on numerous occasions over the years.

These included drink driving, drunk driving and disorderly conduct offences.

He went into rehab for the seventh time in 2014, attending a £6,000-a-month clinic in Southampton.

In the worst case, he spent £20,000 to have anti-drinking pills inserted into his stomach to try to stop drinking.

In an interview in 2021, he admitted that he would “always be an alcoholic”.

Gazza’s demons have seen him occasionally seek help from Alcoholics Anonymous, which he says he recently started visiting again.

The father-of-three, who admitted violence against first wife Sheryl, now lives at agent Katie Davies’ home in Poole, Dorset.

He explained: “I called Katie in November a few years ago crying out loud.

“What I put myself and other people through, prison and rehab – flushing cocaine down the toilet.”

Gascoigne says he now drinks six coffees by 10am and barely watches football because he misses it too much.

But it hasn’t all been plain sailing – with cruel neighbors reportedly placing bottles of gin on Katie’s doorstep in an attempt to tempt Gazza.

He added: “I think I’ll surrender when I’m in a wooden box.

“Besides, I’ll keep fighting.”
