I’m marrying my school PE teacher & my pals still call her ‘miss’ – telling mum & dad was the hardest part

A MAN is engaged to his former teacher – and admits his friends still call her ‘Miss’.

Scott Davies, 33, and Helen Booth, 41, met in 2009 – when he was a sixth-former at Barclay School in Stevenage, Hertfordshire, and she was teaching him PE.

Their paths crossed again 13 years later in 2022 – initially they had no idea there was any romantic potential.

But eventually they fell in love, moved in together, and Scott popped the question last month on a beach in Ibiza.

They now have a house together and are due to get married next year.

Scott, a primary school teacher from Stevenage, Hertfordshire, said: “It’s a bit of a whirlwind story. I would never have thought I’d be marrying my former teacher but we’re very happy together.”

Helen, who now works as a special educational needs co-ordinator at a high school, added: “I feel very happy with what we have in our relationship – it’s very special and we make each other happy.”

The pair reunited after Scott returned to Stevenage from Birmingham, West Midlands.

He coached cricket as a 21-year-old at his old school – where Helen still worked at the time – and the pair developed a friendship.

Scott became an elementary school teacher, while Helen began working at a special needs school.

He got back in touch with Helen when he was 25 years old, hoping she could help answer some questions he had about teaching.

Even then, there was no romantic relationship between them and things were “strictly professional”.

Scott said: “It was all professional at that point – we were just touching base.

“I texted her to see how she was and we decided to meet at the bar to talk. We had a drink but then we said ‘is this a date?’

The couple had a few more drinks and realized there was romantic potential.

Scott said: “We ended up spending the next four days together after that.

“Neither of us were actively looking for a partner at the time, but things just fell into place.”

Helen said: “It was wonderful how we hit it off straight away and how natural it was, we both thought it was ‘catching up’ at first but now we know it was our first date.”

Scott claims that Helen was the one teacher that all the boys “had a crush on” when they were at school.

He said: “My friends were excited when they found out – they knew what a beautiful person Helen was.”

Helen said: “Scott kept in touch with some of my colleagues who taught him during his training and they were very happy for us both.”

Within two years of dating, the couple got engaged.

Scott said: “It was interesting when my friends met her because they were taught by her too. At first some of them would still say ‘hi miss’ – it was quite funny – one of them still does! “

It’s not just his friends who have had to adjust – as some of Helen’s friends are also Scott’s former teachers.

Although he initially refused to tell his parents that Helen taught him. “At first I was afraid to tell mom and dad,” he said.

“So first I let my parents meet her without mentioning anything, and then I interjected – ‘oh, by the way, she taught me!’

“Luckily they all got on well and my parents went along with it. Obviously it’s a pretty funny story – we had no idea all those years ago that we’d end up together.”

The couple’s relationship only got stronger and they now even live together in Shefford, Bedfordshire.

But even now when they tell their story, they laugh at how people react.

Scott said: “She’ll say ‘he used to come back and teach me PE’ – but she leaves out the first bit of time we ‘met’.”

Helen said: “I’m looking forward to getting married next year, having a child together and continuing to be happy together.”
