Imran Khan News

Imran Khan, the former prime minister of Pakistan, was detained today as he was entering the Islamabad High Court for a hearing in one of the numerous lawsuits that have been pending against him since his resignation last year.

Paramilitary forces arrested the 70-year-old former cricketer-turned-politician outside the courthouse; leaders of his party, Pakistan-Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), claim that police broke the glass window of the room where his biometric data was being taken and dragged him outside. The arrest occurs a day after the nation’s strong army accused Mr. Khan of making unfounded accusations against a key member of the ISI espionage agency.

Islamabad Police tweeted in Urdu that Imran Khan had been detained in connection with the Qadir Trust issue, which involves charges that Al-Qadir Trust, owned by PTI chairman Mr. Khan and his wife, had been granted millions of dollars’ worth of land by Bahria Town. However, many have questioned whether the arrest was based solely on the merits of the case due to the dramatic way in which it was made.

As PTI urged supporters to demonstrate in the streets, Islamabad police issued a warning that “Section 144 is in force and action will be taken in case of violation.”

In spite of receiving many notices, Imran Khan failed to appear in court, according to a tweet from Pakistan’s interior minister Rana Sanaullah. “The public Accountability Bureau conducted the arrest for creating losses to the public treasury. He was not subjected to any violence, he tweeted in Urdu.

In a video posted on Twitter by his party hours before departing for court, Imran Khan reiterated his accusations against top ISI commander Major-General Faisal Naseer, whom he claims was responsible for the murder attempt against him in Wazirabad.

Imran Khan refers to the government as “choron ki toli (gang of thieves)” in another video, which was originally posted in 2022 and uploaded again shortly after his detention. “…I’ll already be in jail in an illegal case when these words get to you. You should all know at this point that democracy, the rule of law, and fundamental rights are no longer valid. I might not have another opportunity to speak with you.I want to talk about two or three things because of that,” he states in the video that was uploaded to Mr. Khan’s official Instagram account.

Two days prior, Imran Khan had also asserted that Major Naseer was responsible for the savage killing of renowned journalist Arshad Sharif.

“Major-General Faisal Naseer of Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) attempted to murder me twice. He was also complicit in Arshad Sharif’s murder, a TV anchor. He also stripped Senator Azam Swati of my party of his clothes and severely tortured him, Imran Khan, the leader of Pakistan-Tehreek-e-Insaf, claimed at a rally in Lahore on May 7 while standing in the driver’s seat of a car that could withstand a bomb.

Arshad Sharif, a critic of the Army, was assassinated in Kenya in October as he attempted to leave the country after receiving threats from the government’s security services.

The former Pakistani prime minister has lately avoided arrest multiple times, including a daring run away from a police raid at his home in Lahore’s Zaman Park.
