Punjab Legislative Assembly Elections 2022

Inderpreet Kaur attracted media attention when Bhagwant Mann emerged as AAP’s chief ministerial candidate for the 2022 Punjab Legislative Assembly elections on January 18, 2022. In February 2022, Harkirat Singh Sakrali, a resident of Patialanabha, lodged a complaint against Bhagwant Mann with the Chief Electoral Officer of Punjab, alleging that Mann had concealed his marital status in his election affidavit. Apparently, Sacrali accused Mann of writing “not applicable” in the spouse column because Mann was not legally divorced. Sakrali also revealed that he discovered that Inderpreet and Mann failed to attend the second statement of motion after filing for divorce in 2015. According to the information gathered by Sakrali, no divorce decree was passed. Addressing the media, Dhuri constituency officer Ishmit Vijay Singh claimed that she had not received any complaint against Mann. She also said,

Returning officers are not authorized to check a candidate’s marital status unless the candidate has a serious criminal background. “

Contrary to Sakrali’s allegations, the profile of Bhagwant Mann, Member of the 17th Lok Sabha, described Mann’s marital status as “divorcee”.
