Government takedown requests have reportedly exceeded 3,55,000 in the past ten years, according to the report.
With a 50% increase in removal requests, 2022 breaks all previous records. “Government requests to remove content from Google products are increasing.” According to research by Surfshark, the global number has grown about 13 times in the last ten years, from 7 thousand to 91 thousand requests per year. Globally, the survey noted that countries primarily claimed the removal of material as a matter of national security. According to the study, YouTube (8.8k), Google Play Apps (4.3k) and Web Search (1.4k) accounted for most of the content that India demanded to be removed. The Indian government has submitted a total of 19,600 requests to remove content from Google. Over the past ten years, the government has submitted an average of five requests per day. Defamation (20.1%) involving harm to reputation, including accusations of libel, slander and corporate defamation, was the most common reason for requests to remove material. After defamation, impersonation is in second place (16.3%), followed by privacy and security (8.3%).
