Christopher Nolan and Emma Thomas think about it Interstellar 10 years later.
PEOPLE has an exclusive clip from Interstellara new 10th anniversary collector’s edition, in which Oscar winners Nolan, 54, and Thomas, 52, look back on the 2014 film they made together.
“The dark knight trilogy in a way had a very long shadow as it related to Chris’s career,” says Thomas, who married Nolan in 1997 and produced each of his 12 films. “For me, Interstellar is a much more stripped-down emotional film than his previous films. And I think because it’s so personal, people didn’t really know what to make of it when it came out.”
Interstellar debuted two years after Nolan’s last Batman film, The dark knight rises, arrived in cinemas in 2012.
Nolan and his frequent co-writer, brother Jonathan Nolan, brought together two separate original story ideas Interstellar after Steven Spielberg backed out of directing Jonathan’s script, Deadline reported at the time.
“If you say, ‘Why was it the right time to do it Interstellar?’ I don’t know if it’s time he was right. It was right for me,” Christopher says in a clip from “The Future Is Now: A Look Back.” “The movie was good when it came out, but I don’t know if it particularly evoked the zeitgeist like some of the other movies I’ve done have.”

In the film, Matthew McConaughey played Cooper, a former NASA test pilot who lives as a farmer on a futuristic Earth where life is increasingly threatened by global famine in the 2060s.
When Cooper learns that NASA is still active and looking for a new planet for humanity to colonize, he joins scientist Amelia (Anne Hathaway) on a space mission in hopes of finding habitable planets in other galaxies, leaving behind his children (Mackenzie Foy and Timothée Chalamet) lag behind in the process.

“I mean with Interstellar we were actually kind of swimming upstream,” Christopher says in a video of the making of the film. “I felt, my brother felt, all of us involved in the film felt that we were really trying to prove a return to the impulse to explore, to go there at a time when that wasn’t happening .”

The film’s story spans decades as Cooper’s mission takes him further and further into space as his children grow up. Jessica Chastain and Casey Affleck portray his children as adults, while Matt Damon, John Lithgow, Michael Caine and Topher Grace also make cameo appearances.
InterstellarThe 10th Anniversary Collector’s Edition Box Set is released on Tuesday, December 10, featuring 4K Ultra HD and Blu-Ray versions of the film, as well as a third disc with over two hours of new and legacy bonus content. The limited edition set also includes reproductions of five costume patches, five poster reproductions and a never-before-seen script sequence from the director’s archive.
