Interview: Real Indian Matchmaking by Priya Shah The Matchmaker

Hi everyone, I have been watching the Netflix special Indian Matchmaking and I am very aware of all the negative publicity and memes I have collected. Their portrayal of Indian Matchmaking breaks my heart and I can tell you one thing, they misunderstand Indian Matchmaking. I am qualified to comment on this because I have been in the industry for over 30 years and Indian Matchmaking is not what they portray it to be in the show.

But before that I want to share my personal life story with you, I got married at the age of 18 and married the first person my family introduced me to. I had no choice at that time but when I started matchmaking I had only one goal that everyone, boy or girl, should have a choice instead of just 1 or 2 people like before. I am lucky to have my life partner but not everyone can be so lucky.

I will not say the things shown in the show have never happened but they did happen 20 years ago when people were constrained in their minds, limited in their thinking and rigid in their mindset. They wanted everything to go their way but now in the 21st century, matchmaking in India is very different, people are more clear about what they want and kids are more concerned about compatibility with each other rather than height, skin color or features of a person.

Children choose their life partner, not their parents. We do not arrange marriages, we call it arranged love marriage. Here we help people to find the right life partner and arrange multiple dates to give people a chance to know their future life partner better. Instead of offering 1 or 2 options, we offer them more than 9 or 10 options because in today’s era, we believe that no one should compromise, be it a girl or a boy. Because marriage is a forever thing and if it doesn’t work out it leaves a huge scar and regret.

So we never settle for less than perfect, and the divorce rate among the people I match is zero. We will do our best to help our clients find the right life partner and be with them from beginning to end.

All our clients are from very influential families who want only the best for their children, they seek for their children’s happiness and at the same time we always get a special request to find a match as per our child’s choice and not ours. I have studied astrology but I do not promote it because all astrologers have different opinions on the same Kundli and I believe Kundli are just a thing of the past and they do not provide any clarity or guarantee for any match.

If all your Kundli matches with someone but you are not able to make love connection with your partner, then the astrologers shown in the show are misinterpreting Indian matchmaking.

Real matchmaking is companionship, understanding and love. Finally, we do not support people who ask for dowry, nor do we accept clients who make requests.

Indian Matchmaking is a poorly made show that tells you about the old matchmaking customs that died decades ago and we prioritize the company of our children over everything else.
