Iona Wells News

A boy has been arrested for sexually assaulting a student who wrote an open letter about her experience. Ione Wells, a 20-year-old student at Oxford University, was attacked last month as she was walking towards her home in the Camden area. The unidentified 17-year-old was given a two-year juvenile custodial sentence at Highbury Corner Magistrates Court.

After admitting to the sexual assault at an earlier hearing, he was told he would serve the first half of his sentence on probation. The teen will also spend five years on the sex offender registry. During the hearing, he allegedly grabbed Ms. Wells from behind her and pushed her to the ground, causing her to hit her head on the concrete.

He then violently grabbed her chest, ripping her bra in half. Ms Wells described the attack as the most horrifying event of her life and left her feeling “tainted and hurt” in a victim impact statement. She claimed to have experienced flashbacks and heard footsteps.

The 17-year-old’s defense attorney offered leniency, saying the youth “deeply regrets” the attack and was “ready to show” it would be his last.

However, the judge ruled that custody was necessary because the attack was so horrible and would have long-term psychological effects on Ms Wells.

Ms Wells’s bitter letter to her attacker was first published in the student newspaper Cherwell after she lost her right to remain anonymous to discuss the attack. She claimed that the supportive feedback she received in return “transformed” the “incredibly painful” experience.

She said: “My community will not consider it unsafe for us to walk home after dark.” We will not accept or accept the idea that taking the last metro home puts us at risk. Instead, we will board each other and walk our streets. Even if you don’t always notice it, your community is there. It is present. It is very widespread.

After she was attacked and her letter was published, Ms. Wells launched the #NotGuilty campaign, which promotes the idea that victims of sexual assault should never be held accountable.
