IPSO has upheld the Fawcett Society’s complaint about Jeremy Clarkson’s ‘sexist’ column in Sun in a landmark decision. The charity that advocates for gender equality and women’s rights has complained about his column about Meghan Markle, published in December 2022.
In it, the TV personality said she “hated” the Duchess of Sussex and wrote that she “dreamed of the day she would be paraded naked in the streets of every town in England as the crowd chanted: ‘How ugly’ tiger!’ and threw faeces on her.”

The column has received more than 25,000 complaints and this is the first time that IPSO has upheld a complaint based on gender discrimination. Speaking about the situation, the executive director of the Fawcett Association, Jemima Olchawski, said: “The Fawcett Association and the WILDE Foundation have made history with our complaints against The Sun for publishing expertise. Jeremy Clarkson’s derogatory and vile article about the Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle. Miscommunication is unacceptable.

“Since it was founded in 2014, IPSO has never accepted complaints of sexism – and that has changed today. This landmark decision is a real opportunity for the media Our communication catches up with what women have known for years – the hatred and hatred of women is unacceptable and they can’t stand it anymore when they wear sarcastic costumes or make jokes.”
She continued: “Stigma against women that normalize violence and the reporting of blame for women experiencing violence has no place in our media or elsewhere in our society. Today’s decision will help elevate public discussion about women and address stigma in our media.” She added that they were “extremely proud” to stand alongside others who were “appalled” by the article.

The WILDE Trustees added: “As WILDE Trustees, we are encouraged by IPSO’s decision to recognize the harm caused by Jeremy Clarkson’s offensive comments towards the Duchess of Cambridge. Sussex causes and their acknowledgment of our concerns This ruling reaffirms our commitment to creating a safe and inclusive space for women of color and recognizing the importance importance of our collective voice.”

Meanwhile, Jeremy has apologized for the column, writing: “I’m really sorry. Everything from the instep of my feet to the hair follicles on my head. This is me throwing my arms around. It was a worthy mistake. sorry… We guessed it was all there. That moment when we suddenly realized we were all messed up. You sweated and got cold at the same time. And your head was pounding. And you’re sick. I can’t believe what I’ve been through reading. Am I really saying that? It’s horrible.”
He continued: “I was humiliated, just like everyone else. My phone went crazy. Very close friends were furious. Even my daughter took to Instagram to condemn me. Because So I wrote to everyone who worked with me to say I’m so sorry sorry, and then on Christmas morning I also emailed Harry and Meghan in California to apologize. I said I was confused by what they said on TV but the language I used in my column was shameful and I am deeply sorry.”
