Is Comic Con San Diego Leaving?
The legacy of San Diego Comic-Con remains strong, as the iconic event isn’t leaving town forever. However, the convention is expanding into new locations and formats to provide fans with exciting experiences. Comic-Con International recently revealed its collaboration with Royal Caribbean and Entertainment Cruise Productions to launch Comic-Con: The Cruise 2024. This exciting voyage will depart from Tampa, Florida and sail to Grand Cayman and CocoCay, Bahamas, offering exclusive panels, screenings and cosplay competitions.
Comic-Con International has exciting plans for its hometown. They will hold a special edition of the convention in San Diego from November 26-28, 2021 to celebrate the return of in-person events after the pandemic. This special edition will complement the regular Comic Con, scheduled for July 20-23, 2023.
Despite the rumors, the recent extension of the convention agreement with the San Diego Convention Center Corporation confirms their commitment to the city for several more years. Comic-Con International continues to host other events, such as WonderCon in Anaheim, California, and the Comic-Con Museum in Balboa Park, San Diego.
While Comic-Con nurtures its long-standing relationship with San Diego, it looks for innovative ways to connect with fans and create memorable experiences outside of its traditional venue. So far, there are no indications that Comic-Con plans to move from its beloved host city anytime soon.
Why is Comic Con leaving San Diego?

The history of the San Diego convention is deep, dating back to its inaugural event in 1970. Since then, Comic-Con has graced the city with its annual gatherings, becoming an integral part of San Diego’s cultural fabric. Given this longstanding relationship, it seems highly unlikely that the convention will soon part ways with the city.
Despite the challenges posed by recent cancellations and discussions about future events, Comic-Con organizers have shown no intention of moving from their beloved home. As personal events gradually resume, the fervor surrounding the convention’s return to San Diego remains a theme of anticipation and excitement.
Will there be a 2023 Comic-Con in San Diego?
On the lively first day of San Diego Comic-Con, Mike Phillips and Sean Craig made a colorful, attention-grabbing entrance, weaving their way through the bustling crowd outside the convention center. Dressed in spandex Power Ranger suits adorned with eye-catching accessories such as Christmas light-up necklaces, disco balls, glued-on facial hair and stacked sombrero hats, the duo humorously referred to themselves as the “Spandex Mariachi”, although they were unsure of their character identities.
For 15 years now, Mike and Craig have been adding unique accessories to their outfits every year, and this time the stunning rainbow wings were borrowed from someone who wore them during the San Diego Pride Parade, right before Comic-Con. Embracing a deliberately incoherent and off-kilter style, the pair enjoyed enthralling Comic-Con fans with countless photos, embodying the spirit of creative chaos.
Comic-Con 2023 itself seemed to reflect the unconventionality of the Spandex Mariachi duo. Unlike previous years dominated by major Hollywood studios and A-list celebrities, this year most studios stayed away from the event, while the actors’ and writers’ strikes dampened the convention’s star power.
However, despite the lack of major studios and Hollywood stars, Comic-Con continued to thrive. Inside the convention center, various fandoms gathered for lively panels and exhibitions, creating an impressive and engaging atmosphere. Funko, known for its pop culture figurines, displayed an expanded booth called Funkoville, which featured various toy areas, including a replica Blockbuster video store where the figurines were packaged in VHS tape boxes.
The nostalgic Blockbuster theme found another place at Comic-Con, as Lego built its own Brickbuster store, reminiscent of the blue and yellow design of the beloved chain. While Hall H, which traditionally hosts star-studded panels, had fewer celebrity appearances this year, fans eagerly attended events like panels for “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem,” the upcoming animated film, and “Project K,” the first an Indian sci-fi film to debut at Comic-Con.
Although the FX network’s shows lacked celebrity presence, the network designed its signature activation between the convention center and the Hilton San Diego Bayfront Hotel. Fans had the chilling opportunity to visit the “American Horror Story: Delicate” installation, which included a fake injection of blue serum into a doctor’s examination chair, followed by a lollipop containing real ants – a wonderfully creepy experience.
