Is Prince Harry Returning to His Royal Role amid King Charles’ Cancer Diagnosis?

Prince Harry could return to his royal role, according to a new report.

The Duke of Sussex, 39, is reportedly ready to support his father King Charles amid his cancer diagnosis by returning to an interim royal role, sources have said Time.

According to the publication, Harry and Charles, 75, are said to have had a “warm conversation” after the king revealed his health news earlier this month.

Harry, who is fifth in line to the throne after brother Prince William and his three children – Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis – has also told friends he would be willing to continue in the royal role despite stepping down four years ago, Time reported.

Harry’s decision also comes as William’s wife Kate Middleton is recovering from abdominal surgery.

Prince Harry speaks for the first time about King Charles’ cancer diagnosis: ‘I love my family’

According to Timequoted by a royal source, Charles is also believed to want Harry to return to royal duties, saying it would “benefit the institution”.

“On all practical levels, it makes perfect sense for the family to come together to support the king while he is ill,” the insider said.

“Much has been said on both sides in recent years, but it has never detracted from the underlying blood bond and there are now pragmatic aspects to consider, with the welfare of the King and Kate first,” the source continued.

Prince Harry was in high spirits on his return from the UK after visiting dad King Charles, a source says

Prince Harry and his wife, Meghan Markle, have moved to California after retiring as working members of the royal family in 2020. Although Harry has returned to the UK several times, he rarely meets with his father or other family members.

King Charles’ cancer diagnosis was revealed earlier this month after the king underwent a procedure to treat an enlarged prostate in January. He has since suspended all “public engagement duties” and will “continue to carry out state business and official paperwork”, Buckingham Palace said.

Prince Harry spent about a day in the UK earlier this month to see King Charles after he was diagnosed with cancer. Father and son are believed to have had a brief private meeting at Clarence House before the King and Queen Camilla left London for Sandringham. (The reunion marked the first meeting between Prince Harry and King Charles since the coronation ceremony in May 2023, for which the Duke of Sussex also took a similarly quick solo trip to the UK)

Harry, who is in Canada celebrating the One Year to Go Invictus Games Vancouver Whistler 2025 with his wife, spoke for the first time this week about his father’s health in an interview with Good morning AmericaWill Reeve.

To the question how he first learned about his father’s cancer diagnosisHarry replied, “I talked to him. I jumped on a plane and went to see him as soon as I could. Look, I love my family. The fact that I was able to get on a plane and go see him and spend any time with him, I’m grateful for to that.”
