Valerie Adams Early career
In 1998, Valerie Adams met her coach Kirsten Hellier, a former javelin thrower, and they formed a coaching partnership that lasted 11 years. Adams rose to fame in 2001 when she won the World Youth Championships with a throw of 16.87 meters.
The following year she became the world junior champion with a throw of 17.73m and secured a silver medal at the Commonwealth Games with a throw of 17.45m. At the age of eighteen, Adams finished fifth at the 2003 World Championships. She finished seventh in her first Olympics in 2004, although two athletes were later disqualified, and she recently underwent appendectomy.
