ITV drama The Tower has been axed after three series, I can reveal.
A star-studded cast including Gemma Whelan, Emmett J Scanlan and Tamzin Outhwaite helped the crime drama make a decent dent in the ratings.

ITV drama The Tower has been axed after three seasons
And the team behind it was so confident of achieving a fourth edition that its writer began working on the script.
But ITV has now pulled the plug.
A spokesperson for the channel said: “Drama audiences really loved The Tower, but the viewing figures for the last series fell short of expectations so unfortunately we won’t be ordering again.”
Game of Thrones star Gemma played Special Constable Sarah Collins, part of a team of detectives investigating serious crimes in central London, while Peaky Blinders star Emmett played Inspector Kieran Shaw who laid down the rules.
Jimmy Akingbola also played DC Steve Bradshaw in the series, based on the Kate London Met Police book series. The series began with an audience of more than five and a half million in November 2021.
But the third series, which aired in early September, lost more than a million viewers over four episodes, finishing with just over 2.5 million viewers.
Patrick Harbinson, who adapted the books for TV, was still hoping for a fourth choice.
“Different Fears”
He told The Sun’s TV Mag in August: “I’m already writing the first episode of The Tower four just to show ITV we’re ready to go, because Kate [London] had already written a brilliant fourth novel, The Misper, on which the new series would be based.
“There are more brilliant stories to tell, including Gemma Whelan’s character DS Sarah Collins and PC Lizzie Adama, played by Tahirah Sharif.
“Both of these characters still have a long way to go. The world of crime in England is changing rapidly. Different crimes, different fears, different heroes. I would love to do more about them.”
Gemma previously said: “I’m trying to send all the thoughts to TV and all the people to get involved, it’s going to be numbers, numbers.
“This has grown so nicely as a series. We’d definitely like to do more.”

The film draws on a trove of recently discovered audio tapes in which the young queen of pop reflects on her life.
It is being shown on Sky Documentaries under the title Becoming Madonna, and includes rare footage and intimate interviews with family, friends and collaborators, some of whom have never been heard from before.
The doctor vows to revisit the tragedies that fueled her ambition, such as the early deaths of her mother, her dance teacher Christopher Flynn and close friend Martin Burgoyne.
Sky’s Hayley Reynolds said: “This is a fresh perspective on an enduring icon.”

MADE in Chelsea star-turned-marathoner Spencer Matthews is about to appear in a documentary about his latest challenge.
Seven In Seven, made by UK indie production company Whisper, will see him complete ironman challenges across seven continents.
If he achieves the feat, he will break another Guinness World Record, having run 30 desert marathons in 30 days in August.
Although the show has yet to have a channel commit to the project, the company is confident it will find a buyer, given Spencer’s incredible filming effort.
According to the online magazine Deadline, Spencer will complete a 3.8km swim, 180km bike ride and 42.2km marathon on every continent, ending in Antarctica.
Almost as challenging as at least two miles down London’s King’s Road.

In addition to having a refined line in formal wear, he was also prone to cross-dressing and spent his entire inheritance on a lavish lifestyle.
He will star opposite Bridgerton’s Ruby Stokes in the drama, which has yet to receive a release date.

“And I said, ‘Absolutely fucking no, you’re going to squash me like a bug.'”
