ITV’s Payback: Meet the star-studded cast, including Happy Valley and Grantchester stars

Promising plenty of high-stakes drama, In return is a compelling new crime thriller coming to ITV. Set to premiere on Wednesday, October 4, the six-part series follows Lexie Noble and the danger that follows her after her husband, Jared, is brutally murdered.

What is ITV’s Payback about?

Official synopsis for In return teases: “A compelling character-driven series, Payback follows Lexie Noble, played by Morven Christie (The Bay, The A Word, Ordeal by Innocence), as she becomes embroiled in a dangerous police operation to bring down notorious crime lord Cal Morris, played by Peter Mullan (Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, Subway, Ozark).

“With an idyllic family lifestyle in the suburbs of Edinburgh, Lexie is unaware that her husband, Jared, is laundering Cal Morris’ ill-gotten gains on a massive scale. Jared’s every move is tracked by financial investigators DC Jibran Khan (Prasanna Puwanarajah) and DCI Adam Guthrie (Derek Riddell), who is determined to use the Noble family to bring Cal Morris to justice.

Meet the cast of ITV’s Payback

Morven Christie

Morven Christie is no stranger to television. Known for her role as Amanda Hopkins in Grantchester (2014-17) and actress Lisa Armstrong in Cove (2019-21), the Scottish actress has worked with ITV on several occasions. More recently, fans have also been able to spot Morven in Netflix’s supernatural detective thriller, Lockwood & Co. (2023) starring Penelope Fittes.

Speaking about Lexie’s character in Payback, Morven said: “In this family she’s built with Jared, she has an idealistic, wonderful, loving home life, but outside of that she’s actually pretty closed off to the world. She doesn’t really trust people, so when this starts happen at the beginning of the show, she goes back to this mode of survival, she doesn’t trust anyone.

“She’s a pretty hard person for Jared’s friends to step in and take care of because she doesn’t want help. She doesn’t want to be taken care of. She’s really independent.”

Peter Mullan

Actor and director Peter Mullan has starred in a number of cult classic films including Brave Heart (1995), Train spotting (1996), Young Adam (2003), the last two Harry Potter films (2010–11), i A war horse (2011).

Prasanna Puwanarajah

Prasanna Puwanarajah is taking the television world by storm. After he got roles in hit series like Doctor Foster (2017), Patrick Melrose (2018), A world on fire (2019), i Duty service (2021), the actor lent his talent Crown fifth season last year. Appearing as Martin Bashir, the former British journalist who conducted the infamous Panorama interview with Princess Diana, Prasanna certainly made an impression.

Now he has stepped into the shoes of DC Jibran Khan, a financial investigator with Police Scotland. Determined to kill the criminal Cal Morris, Jibran and his colleague, investigator Adam Guthrie, have a difficult case.

This time he will play Inspector Adam Guthrie, a Detective Chief Inspector in the police’s financial division. Offering some insight into the character, Derek told ITV: “I’d say he’s a bit of an old-school detective and that’s how some of his younger colleagues see him.

“He finds having to go after Cal Morris a bit tiresome, having to take him down with financial means and not just normal policing. I think he finds using technology and delving into this guy’s financial affairs a bit tiresome. But he understands that this is the way will catch that guy he’s been after for a long, long time.”
