J Balvin Says His Upcoming Album Is a 'Lot of Greatness' and He Wants to Make Music for the 'World' (Exclusive)

Balvin’s collaboration with Verizon on the Catch my iPhone campaign launched on Friday

J Balvin is getting ready to share his latest project with the world.

Speaking with PEOPLE about the launch of Verizon’s Catch My iPhone campaign featuring Balvin’s latest single “Dientes,” the Colombian star opened up about what fans can expect from his upcoming album.

“I’m Latin American, but I make music for the whole world,” says Balvin, 38. “I want people from Japan, people from Indonesia and Australia to connect with music. I mean [“Dientes”] accomplished that.”

With the help of Usher and DJ Khaled, Balvin released “Dientes,” an interpolation of Usher’s 2004 hit “Yeah!” on Friday.

“It reminds me of going to the club in 2019. And when I heard those sounds I said, ‘I feel like I have to do this.’ This new era song… and then having Usher on it. It’s crazy,” says the “Mi Gente” singer.

Balvin’s last album was in 2021 Jose. Since then, he has embraced fatherhood (he had a son, Rio, with model Valentina Ferrer in June 2021) and has taken time to think.

“A lot of things have changed. I’m just a different person. I’ve grown up a bit more,” he says. “I still have a lot of things to adjust to… I have to change. Like definitely getting into a space to take a minute and say, ‘We’ve got to have fun and it’s not all work.'”

Professionally, Balvin has been working to “reinvent” himself for his upcoming album, which does not yet have a release date. “I’m excited. It’s a great size,” he says.

In February, Balvin opened up to PEOPLE about raising the Hispanic community to set an example for this son.

“I really relate to people who need help. Growing up as an artist, I wanted help, but I didn’t have it,” he said at the time. “I didn’t know what was around the next corner. I had no one to guide me.”

J Balvin says he ‘never thought’ he would ‘suffer’ from mental health issues: ‘I need to speak up’

“When you have a son, you want your child to be better and not make the same mistakes we did. We want people to help them and give them a chance they might not have had.”

He concluded: “You can talk a lot, but you have to be an example. I do it because I really enjoy it, but if I give that example to my son, it will be nice. Because actions speak for themselves. That’s really key in life.”
