J.D. Vance Agreed That the ‘Whole Purpose of the Postmenopausal Female’ Is to Help Raise Grandkids

More of Ohio Sen. JD Vance’s past comments about women are surfacing, this time from a 2020 podcast interview in which he and the host discussed the “postmenopausal woman.”

In the episode Portal podcast released in April 2020, Vance — who was recently selected as former President Donald Trump’s 2024 running mate — talked about how his wife, Usha Vance’s mother, came to live with their family after one of his children was born.

Host Eric Weinstein, director of venture capital firm Thiel Capital, asked Vance about the experience of sharing a roof with his mother-in-law.

The Republican vice presidential candidate said having his grandmother in the house makes his son “a much better human being.” He continued, “By the way, the evidence on this is, like, super clear.”

“That’s the whole purpose of a postmenopausal woman in theory,” Weinstein interjects, while Vance says, “Yeah.”

Weinstein then made a racist comment, calling the presence of a grandmother in the home “a weird, unadvertised feature of being married to an Indian woman”.

Without acknowledging the sting, Vance went on to call the experience “in some ways, the most transgressive thing I’ve ever done against, in some ways, a hyper-neoliberal approach to work and family.”

He explained that his mother-in-law had taken a year off from her job as a biology teacher to help care for their child. Vance said the decision didn’t make economic sense, asking, “Why didn’t she just keep her job [and] give us part of the salary to pay someone else to do it?”

Postmenopause occurs when menstruating people do not have a cycle for 12 consecutive months. This means that the person is no longer in the reproductive phase of his life. The Cleveland Clinic says that, on average, people become postmenopausal around age 52.

Vance recently got into some hot water for other comments he made about women and motherhood.

In July, controversial comments from Vance’s 2021 interview with then-Fox News host Tucker Carlson resurfaced. During their conversation, Vance claimed that the US is run, under Democratic leadership, “by a bunch of childless catwomen who are miserable because of their own lives and the choices they’ve made, so they want to make the rest of the country miserable.”

He continued: “It’s just a basic fact – you look at Kamala Harris, Pete Buttigieg, AOC – the entire future of the Democrats is controlled by people without children. And how does it even make sense that we’ve handed over our country to people who don’t really have a direct stake in it?”

He recently doubled down on his comments, saying on Megyn Kelly’s Sirius XM show: “Obviously it was a sarcastic comment. I have nothing against cats. I know the media wants to attack me and want me to join them down there, Megyn, but I just said that have children — becoming a father, becoming a mother — I really think it changes your perspective in a pretty profound way.”
